Volunteering
A soapbox editorial by (guess who?) ron thomas
For 10 years Jacky and I have watched the coming and going of volunteers in our Longview Hills Community. This community is well known here as well as throughout Newport for its generosity and support of a variety of charities, clubs and organizations. Folks here have a most valuable commodity to bring to the table.... time. Time to do many of the things that we would have liked to do during our working life when we had to sell our time to an employer to raise a family and put bread on the table.
Of course not everyone is interested in sharing their time and they choose to hoard their time and energy to devote to whatever it is they choose to pursue. Can’t fault that idea as each person now gets to choose and that is probably the best part of retirement.
Now there is this thing about our time that you know about but may not have considered, kind of put it on the backburner to think about at another time. Time for all of us living beings takes a toll on health. That is simple enough.. I don’t think there will be much argument on that. At this end of life.. “The Retirement Years”, health declines more rapidly than in the rest our lives. As you graduate to another year of life you may feel the loss of a physical ability and though modern science tries to slow and stave off this process it is inevitable.
Still, in this community, folks that volunteer feel called to extend their volunteer activities beyond the point of where common sense dictates they should. So, I put it to you that if we are to continue with Social Club activities, Fishing Clubs, CERT teams, Potlucks... Games, Community events and the like... Those things that give our community such charm and purpose.... We need to all step back here and take a look at this situation....
Say that you are a young person (under 65) new to retirement. It’s wonderful beyond your wildest expectations... there are so many things to do... you’re having a ball... Volunteering? “Uh, yeah just as soon as I......(fill in the blank)” . You must know, if you stop a second and consider, that most of our volunteers are older (actually, they are you in 5 to 10 years). Look at the bulk of them entering their 65th -75th birthdays.. Do they move those chairs and tables around in the clubhouse? When they serve you a breakfast what do they do afterwards? (I personally am pooped for 3 to 4 days) But you who don’t volunteer are out there having fun right after breakfast. I have heard it said that the same folks in the Fishing Club that do all the volunteer cleanup and fish trap activities wonder why the rest of the club doesn’t show for those chores but enjoy all benefits of membership. Have you heard the people at the Old Geezers complain about the activities or the state of the clubhouse or how the depleting Social Club treasury should be used for this or that? Our CERT team is aging and in some cases passing away or moving on... When the crisis comes and it will... who will be trained to look after our welfare? Maybe you younger folks feel that you can take care of yourselves... (Guess what?... You will soon be older. And I mean soon.)
If our park has 265 folks why can you only count on 10 or so to do the bulk of the work? Maybe 20 or so to help some of the time and certainly no more than 30 to 40 to participate in an activity? Whatever the reasons here is a truth .. count on it, “As our people get older they are capable of less volunteering”. They may want to volunteer and help but they are less and less able to do more and more. Young man or Young woman... step up to the plate... Time for you to learn the ropes and volunteer. Now you may think that this is a bunch of hooey but I will now illustrate for you just how incredibly self centered our folks are.... Ready?
I can absolutely guarantee the residents of this park that I can pack the clubhouse for a specific kind of activity. All I have to do is say, “Free food and someone will prepare and cleanup after you... Just come and enjoy yourself.” I am betting 60 to 90 people will be there... guaranteed. Also, I know the same 10 people will be there serving and cleaning up after them. Don’t believe it... The Annual Fall (free) Dinner is coming up... As you look around the room and are counting don’t forget to count yourself.

In one study covered in the book, a group of people took placebos—fake pharmaceuticals—that they were told were expensive. Another group took the same pills but was told the drugs were inexpensive.
The 'expensive' pills were found to be more effective pain relievers than the 'cheap' ones.
The study could have implications for patients given generic, instead of brand-name, medications."

Several members of the LVH Fishing Club have helped and participated in the U-DA-MAN fishing tournament which occurs every year in October. Some of the funds from that event are used for enhancement of salmon habitat. Larry Dale, Wayde Dudley and Barb Dudley helped ODFW on Sunday, September 21st, with a project to place logs on Big Elk Creek. The US Forest Service selected 70 logs and had them stacked in a nearby meadow. (By logs I mean full grown trees that had the branches cut off, some with huge root wads). A helicopter then picked up the logs, one by one, and placed them in several designated areas on the creek. Our job was to help direct traffic and make sure no vehicles crossed the road if the helicopter was overhead. As we only had 4 vehicles that day we had plenty of time and the great pleasure of watching the helicopter work. It was amazing how they could pick up the logs, carry them and then place then exactly where they needed to go. It was very impressive as each round trip only took about 2-1/2 minutes.

Patron saint of lost causes
Every time there is a disaster I go out to the garage and root around for my soap box... Let's see it must be there over in the corner... There it is underneath the pile of lost causes that have made there way to my door over the years.
What a great collection it is. Sad that they inevitably ended up tossed in a corner of the garage... Heck, we even rented an extra storage place over at the lockers by the state police building. I told everyone that it was for Jacky's "stuff collection" but there is a good deal of my causes over there too.
At any rate I need to get up on this soap box so I can rail at you better even though it is waste of both of our times... Look at the terror 70 to 100mph winds engendered in Americans living in Texas... I have even seen them on TV talking in awe about 35mph winds... Yet every year we experience the same thing and we more or less dodge the bullet of disaster. Will we too have our, "perfect storm"?
Enter the new effort to build a communications network and teach everyone here how to use their FRS radios. We are hoping this effort will not end up on the pile of lost causes in my garage.
One of the newscasters last night said "We have lost all electricity, telephones and cell phones are not working well but we have our satellite link to show y........ as the screen flickered and failed. Hmmm? No electricity? No telephone? No Cell phone? They said in some places service would not be back for up to two months! Two months! How many people called for help ... with what? In Katrina?
If you have no way to communicate how are you going to call for help? Communication and how to use it lay at the very base of a good plan for survival... We are building that plan now.
Don't let this effort join the heap of Lost Causes stacked up in my garage. Get off your duffus and find that FRS radio and either charge it up or put new batteries in it. Tune to CH6.16 or even ch6 if you have to and listen in on your radio to the LVH emergency net Sunday at 7pm sharp!.. Learn how to take part...
If you learn now how to do this small thing and stay on the net each week not only to improve your emergency communications skills but to help your neighbors develop theirs... do this small thing.... When the day comes, and it will, you will both help and be helped.
Patron saint of lost causes
Every time there is a disaster I go out to the garage and root around for my soap box... Let's see it must be there over in the corner... There it is underneath the pile of lost causes that have made there way to my door over the years.
What a great collection it is. Sad that they inevitably ended up tossed in a corner of the garage... Heck, we even rented an extra storage place over at the lockers by the state police building. I told everyone that it was for Jacky's "stuff collection" but there is a good deal of my causes over there too.
At any rate I need to get up on this soap box so I can rail at you better even though it is waste of both of our times... Late Night Creeper @ LVH

I wish this was a cute story with a title to reel you in... But it is not. You may remember a time ago when one of our neighbors at the north end of the park on Evergreen awoke to find a man in her home in his shorts looking at her? The man was subsequently arrested and that seemed to be the end of the story. Our neighbor lives alone and is a sound sleeper.
She went to Larry Henson with this story on Friday and he retold it to me. He said all that he could do was suggest she call the police.... What happened you say?
She went out on her patio and was surprised to find muddy footprints all over it and the gate to her backyard open. Considering her previous experience it is easy to see why she might be upset don't you think?
Why did I get called? Well, over the years, I've become the LVH patron saint of lost causes. When nothing can be done about something it is delivered to my door step for some sort of action.
We could ramp up Neighborhood Watch but who would do it? Most of you are to busy or have other things to do much more important than Neighborhood Watch. When we retire we all shed responsibility like the unwanted snake skin it has been all of our lives.. Probably a natural reaction as so many have done so.
Well, what has happened to Neighborhood Watch anyhow? Well, one day I opened the door and there was another lost cause sitting there... it was Neighborhood Watch.
Any effort at trying to revamp the program keeps falling away from my grasp... So here we are ... you and I and it looks like a problem is coming. I asked Wayne Hill of the NPD Volunteers to put in an appearance in that area in the volunteer police cruiser and he is going to do that... Have you got any ideas that you could give that don't start with the phrase, "YOU COULD DO.........." I am really burnt out on those sort of ideas... I am sure you can understand... I am after all, just like you.
Here is Jacky's 2 cents, "Put in there that we are looking for a Neighborhood Watch Coordinator." Ok it's done but we all know what the answer is already don't we?
