Columnists - StatesmanJournal.com: "Burdene Claflin is hooked, and not just because her ball breaks noticeably to the left.

She has discovered a new favorite pastime at Hidden Lakes Retirement Residence: Wii bowling.

'This is really fun,' Claflin, 85, says. 'Now if we can just get the men to join in. You know what they say? 'I'm not going to get up there and make a fool out of myself in front of the women.' '

So for now, a group of gaming grandmas gather in the ballroom at the South Salem retirement facility, eager to give the wildly popular video-game system a try.

Wii, by Nintendo, is proving video games are no longer just child's play. Seniors are tossing aside their cards, picking up wireless controllers and having a blast.

'You're never too old to start,' says 90-year-old Lucy Hardenbrook. 'I enjoy it as much as the young ones, and I'm going to keep right on.'

Wii systems are all the rage at retirement communities and senior centers across the country. It's the new bridge or pinochle. Better than bingo."
