National Neighborhood Night Out...

Was yesterday. At the Thomas house we had 21 folks show up for a great afternoon of potlucking, talk, visiting, music and a little shmoozing about Neighborhood Watch issues with residents and block captains. The idea was to get to know your neighbors. If you know each other it becomes much easier to look out for one another because you have connected and made a personal relationship. Sure it takes a little effort but the dividends far outweigh the investment.

Every year we have a national night out and hopefully the folks at Longview Hills will find out that this is not a chore but a great idea. Next year make a commitment to yourself to help or join a block party.. The good time you will have is great. The food deliciously fattening and the conversation with new and old friends, vintage.

Our neighbors were shown the new CERT data base taking form. Issued Pet stickers for their front windows and asked for email addresses and pet info. They were told about the ICE program where you program the word "ICE" into your cell phone with the phone number of your emergency contact. Paramedics and hospitals check the cell phone for ICE numbers in case you are incapacitated in an accident.

All the serious stuff aside I was able to talk science with Blaine Kalar and Mike Larsen in which we found that the serrated edge on coins was invented by Sir Isaac Newton as a means to keep people from shaving gold off of coins. We talked of the standoff at Massada between the Romans and the Jews. I brought up the discovery in Patagonia of a new dinosaur weighing in at around 110 tons with vertebra as begin as a man.

Next year don't miss the opportunity.
