It is my privilege to thank you once again for another successful year of the annual SHOP WITH A COP program.

Each Holiday Season, this program establishes a positive rapport with less fortunate children of the Lincoln County community and the Law Enforcement Officers from the Oregon State Police, Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office, Newport Police Department, Lincoln City Police Department, Toledo Police Department and the United States Coast Guard.

Employees from the Department of Human Services, the District Attorney’s Office, OSP and even Santa, volunteer their time to participate and assist with making this event the success it has become. The participating officers also look forward to interacting with the children in a happy and friendly setting.

Each year we seek monetary donations from the community. This program is completely funded by 100 % of YOUR donations, and each dollar is tax deductible! The more money we collect, the more children can participate in this worthwhile and fun event.

On October 30th Don Mann, General Manager of the Port of Newport, spoke to the Longview Hills Fishing Club about the construction of the International Dock currently underway. He presented a slide show explaining the construction currently underway and the importance of having the dock as it would bring jobs, income from the distant fishing fleet as well as possible tourism dollars from cruise ships. Of special importance to us all, especially members of Central Coast CERT and Longview Hills CERT, is that the construction will be such that in the event of a tsunami or earthquake, the dock will be built to stay in place and could possibly be "Ground Zero" and the point where goods and services would originate from. Mr. Mann invited anyone interested in this project or who had questions to feel free to visit him at his Port Office.

Coast Guard/LVH CERT Team

The Coast Guard Helicopter will be evaluating the LVH Clubhouse Parking Lot as a drop/pickup zone on Nov 8th. They will be working over marine radio with the CERT team on the ground in the evaluation process.

Our CERT team will also have elements stationed at the Golf Course where the helicopter may make a landing on the driving range in a simulation of an injury pick up. Coordination for this part of the event still is not solid so we are working on it.

We are a part of an exercise taking place up and down the coast in preparation for a major disaster...

Last week the entire Central Coast CERT team underwent training at the Coast Guard Air Facility at Newport Airport. Teams learned helicopter proceedures including lifting to the helicopter injured dummies by means of the on board hoist and Stokes litter.

This new exercise will help us set up for the disaster we hope never to see...

You folks in the park are welcome to attend our meetings on Mondays at 10 am in the clubhouse. We are woefully understaffed for a disaster to the point that it is pretty scary to think less than 10 older folks are going to be able to care for 265 older residents. There will be no firemen, police, or first aid folks after a major disaster they will be strained past the breaking limits... It could be many days before help arrives... The CERT team is trained to fill the breach as best it can.

Think about those numbers 10 CERT's to serve 265... This really makes me glum... When are the 10 to sleep? To eat? Will they catch a break? Or just run until they drop?

We meet for an hour or so a week on Tuesdays, 10am, at the clubhouse to train. Can you spare an hour? If you are a young one so much the better. We lost 2 team members this year... one because of health and another passed away.

For 10 years Jacky and I have watched the coming and going of volunteers in our Longview Hills Community. This community is well known here as well as throughout Newport for its generosity and support of a variety of charities, clubs and organizations. Folks here have a most valuable commodity to bring to the table.... time. Time to do many of the things that we would have liked to do during our working life when we had to sell our time to an employer to raise a family and put bread on the table.

Of course not everyone is interested in sharing their time and they choose to hoard their time and energy to devote to whatever it is they choose to pursue. Can’t fault that idea as each person now gets to choose and that is probably the best part of retirement.

Now there is this thing about our time that you know about but may not have considered, kind of put it on the backburner to think about at another time. Time for all of us living beings takes a toll on health. That is simple enough.. I don’t think there will be much argument on that. At this end of life.. “The Retirement Years”, health declines more rapidly than in the rest our lives. As you graduate to another year of life you may feel the loss of a physical ability and though modern science tries to slow and stave off this process it is inevitable.

Still, in this community, folks that volunteer feel called to extend their volunteer activities beyond the point of where common sense dictates they should. So, I put it to you that if we are to continue with Social Club activities, Fishing Clubs, CERT teams, Potlucks... Games, Community events and the like... Those things that give our community such charm and purpose.... We need to all step back here and take a look at this situation....

Say that you are a young person (under 65) new to retirement. It’s wonderful beyond your wildest expectations... there are so many things to do... you’re having a ball... Volunteering? “Uh, yeah just as soon as I......(fill in the blank)” . You must know, if you stop a second and consider, that most of our volunteers are older (actually, they are you in 5 to 10 years). Look at the bulk of them entering their 65th -75th birthdays.. Do they move those chairs and tables around in the clubhouse? When they serve you a breakfast what do they do afterwards? (I personally am pooped for 3 to 4 days) But you who don’t volunteer are out there having fun right after breakfast. I have heard it said that the same folks in the Fishing Club that do all the volunteer cleanup and fish trap activities wonder why the rest of the club doesn’t show for those chores but enjoy all benefits of membership. Have you heard the people at the Old Geezers complain about the activities or the state of the clubhouse or how the depleting Social Club treasury should be used for this or that? Our CERT team is aging and in some cases passing away or moving on... When the crisis comes and it will... who will be trained to look after our welfare? Maybe you younger folks feel that you can take care of yourselves... (Guess what?... You will soon be older. And I mean soon.)

If our park has 265 folks why can you only count on 10 or so to do the bulk of the work? Maybe 20 or so to help some of the time and certainly no more than 30 to 40 to participate in an activity? Whatever the reasons here is a truth .. count on it, “As our people get older they are capable of less volunteering”. They may want to volunteer and help but they are less and less able to do more and more. Young man or Young woman... step up to the plate... Time for you to learn the ropes and volunteer. Now you may think that this is a bunch of hooey but I will now illustrate for you just how incredibly self centered our folks are.... Ready?

I can absolutely guarantee the residents of this park that I can pack the clubhouse for a specific kind of activity. All I have to do is say, “Free food and someone will prepare and cleanup after you... Just come and enjoy yourself.” I am betting 60 to 90 people will be there... guaranteed. Also, I know the same 10 people will be there serving and cleaning up after them. Don’t believe it... The Annual Fall (free) Dinner is coming up... As you look around the room and are counting don’t forget to count yourself.

Dorothy Sisk asked her colleague, Lamar University paleontologist Jim Westgate, to accompany her to her Bolivar Peninsula home after Ike hit. Together they found something unusual in the remains of Sisk's front yard: a six-pound fossil tooth."

Ancient Tsunami Carried Giant Boulders to Tonga: "The largest of the seven boulders is 50 feet (15 meters) wide and estimated to weigh 1,600 tons. It currently sits more than 300 feet (100 meters) from the sea and 30 feet (10 meters) above sea level, an anomaly on the South Pacific island's flat landscape.

'We suspect that this may be the largest [object] moved uphill by a tsunami,' said Cliff Frohlich, a senior scientist at the Institute for Geophysics at the University of Texas at Austin."

Several members of the LVH Fishing Club have helped and participated in the U-DA-MAN fishing tournament which occurs every year in October. Some of the funds from that event are used for enhancement of salmon habitat. Larry Dale, Wayde Dudley and Barb Dudley helped ODFW on Sunday, September 21st, with a project to place logs on Big Elk Creek. The US Forest Service selected 70 logs and had them stacked in a nearby meadow. (By logs I mean full grown trees that had the branches cut off, some with huge root wads). A helicopter then picked up the logs, one by one, and placed them in several designated areas on the creek. Our job was to help direct traffic and make sure no vehicles crossed the road if the helicopter was overhead. As we only had 4 vehicles that day we had plenty of time and the great pleasure of watching the helicopter work. It was amazing how they could pick up the logs, carry them and then place then exactly where they needed to go. It was very impressive as each round trip only took about 2-1/2 minutes.
