CERT/US Coast Guard Drill
To prepare for the Central Coast Drill on November 8th, a pre-drill meeting was held at the regular Monday CERT meeting at LVH on November 3rd. Mike Mulligan came to outline the entire project, especially as it pertained to the areas at the Agate Beach Golf Course and Longview Hills.
The drill was coastal wide, from Yachats to North Lincoln City. LVH CERT, however, only participated in the drill at the Agate Beach Golf Course (Code Name: Hotel) and Longview Hills (Code Name: India). Luckily, Nicole Mangum was able to clear the area of the pesky goat who had wondered in the landing zone so all was ready for the drill. There was some doubt if the drill was going to come off due to inclement weather and concern about two ships in trouble out to sea. The helicopter wasn't able to hover but did make the necessary fly over. The above photos are from the Agate Beach Golf Course.
The group at Longview Hills cordoned off the parking lot and marked it so the helicopter would be able to spot it. Everyone was prepared, thanks to Ron Thomas' planning. We even had radio trouble and were able to overcome that problem. Although the drill didn't go as originally planned, it left little doubt that the CERT team is prepared for an emergency. We learn a great deal each time we have one of these drills. Our only hope now is that we will never have to put it to the real test.
