Newport News-Times: Port of Newport to move forward in bid for NOAA site

Newport News-Times: Port of Newport to move forward in bid for NOAA site: "In February, Newport was among 11 sites from an initial field of more than 30 to be granted a visit from NOAA's evaluation team overseeing selection of the port for its Pacific fleet, which presently is based in Lake Union, Wash.

The delineated area being examined by NOAA is comprised of harbors beginning in the greater Puget Sound area, including waterside properties north to Bellingham, west to Port Angeles, south to the Columbia River (including Astoria), along the coast to Newport and southeast to Portland on the Willamette River.

NOAA is seeking a lease term of 10 years beginning July 1, 2011, with multi-year options for up to 20 years.

Ability to secure transfer of the base, which gathers information on the oceans, atmosphere, space and sun, would have an immense impact on the economy of Newport, Lincoln County and the state."
