SUMPTER -- Eighty-year-old Bruce Parke was almost killed in 1995 by a man who thought he had a stash of nuggets and gold dust in his Eastern Oregon cabin.

'These guys go crazy when they see gold,' said Parke, warming himself beside a crackling wood stove in his rustic, snow-covered cabin surrounded by mining equipment."
