The Reedsport Elk Herd by r. thomas (LVH resident)

Pacific Coast near Reedsport, Oregon, USA.Image via Wikipedia

Yesterday, we set off on an adventure to visit the Roseveldt Elk Herd outside of Reedsport. Most of you know we have a Ford minivan and so it is fairly roomy for Seniors on a trip. Roomy it may be but getting in and out of the back seat is a very hard, albeit a humorous situation for short legs and arthritic knees. There is my method of grabbing for every handhold in site to lower myself to the floor with my feet dangling out the door and then standing up and waiting for my knees to wake up. Then there is the graceful Beverly who somehow manages to slide off the seat on to the floor and then exit as if there is nothing to it at all. There were 4 of us and we all had a good time.

On the trip were Jacky Thomas, Ginger Stout, Bev Garvey and me (Ron Thomas). Ever since the four of us went to see the Lion King in Portland we have become good riding buddies. The conversations swirling about the cabin jumped from the ribald to reminiscences of times long past and experiences of growing up in a era much different from today. The elk as expected were not in the elk viewing area.

Once you get to the viewing area about 5 miles east of Reedsport you will see a nicely constructed area with (the ever important) restrooms sprinkled liberally throughout the roadside park. What you usually will not see are the elk! Yet signs proclaim that this nice park is the elk viewing area. For years we have turned back several times in disappointment that there were no elk to view. Then one day by accident we drove east for an adventure. Viola! Just a quarter mile east of the Elk viewing area was the elk herd. It seems that the grass is greener there... Somebody has to be watering it and that is what makes an elk happy. Since that discovery we have always seen elk on this trip.

On the way home we decided to show our friends Winchester Bay because it was such a beautiful camping area. What happened to it? It had changed from its normal serene beauty to an ocean of campers and four tracks with a sprinkling of dune buggies zipping up and down the road shoulder like a swarm of annoying bumble bees. We turned around and started home but Bev spotted a bakery next to 101 and 3 of us went in to case the joint. I bought a big shepard loaf of Jalapeño/Cheddar bread and Bev bought some cheese... Lunch! Pretty darn good.

The chatter continued as the scenery passed by until we got to Florence and a drive through Old Towne was in order... It was packed. Then over the cliff drive to Yachats were we did the van Exodus scenario at a local Mexican bistro/restaurant where the terrible service and overpriced cuisine was only matched by the 4 thumbs down fare. That aside, returning home we saw a NOAA ship parked at its birth and all the new NOAA 2 story buildings have their walls up.

On a drive

Mountain Jefferson behind Detroit Lake in Oreg...Image via Wikipedia

We lost ourselves on a drive today and found ourselves 3 hours later. Our GPS unit was completely confused. It tried to take us home from the Lion King in Portland. We knew better... we were in the Cascades. The unit could not find satellites to triangulate where we were so she just started giving directions as if we were in Portland. The lady inside that box is very aggravating as she continually insists we make a legal U turn and go back to Portland. That is obviously because you can't get anywhere from where we were... So, as she patiently pointed out, we needed to go somewhere else so we could get to where we wanted to be.

That of course would not take us to the wonders of the back roads and the scenic beauty we wanted to explore. Triple A (AAA) let us down a bit too. Their map was not accurate and the printing was to small to read even with glasses. Being lost is the best part of the drive though. So, we continued on and finally were unlost near Mt. Jefferson at the intersection of National Forest Road 11 and Oregon Hwy. 22.

From the beginning we took the 34 toward Lebanon and then turned onto the 20 where we drove along a reservoir Lake for a few miles and then the map showed we could cross to the other side of the lake and continue on a road marked as paved in blue at Green Peter Lake and so we did. What a nice lake. A funny name though, don't you think? Kind of makes you wonder if you are a boy and go for a dip... would your parts turn... well... green?

The blue road on the map deteriorated into a narrow, windy road called NF11. Here we saw something I haven't seen since I was a kid. People were camped out along side the road anywhere there was a wide spot. No campground, no fees, you just pull along side the road and put up a tent... Viola! You are camping 1940-1950 style. Most everyone had campfire rings made from rock circles... The men all had big bellies and shorts. The ladies were pretty stocky in bathing suits and none of them seemed to care a whit about what people thought. They were having a good time and the kids were running and swimming and having a high old time.

We continued on NF 11 and I shut the voice off the GPS so the lady in there could have a "time out" before she popped a blood vessel. Eventually, at a higher elevation she was able to get her bearings and tell us where we were. She sounded a bit hoarse to me... Serves her right. Meanwhile, the Green Peter lake changed to a river and the road narrowed to a single paved lane with turnouts here and there and more roadside campers. Eventually, we were next to a creek as the road wound higher into the forest.

You could see Jacky was becoming anxious as there was not so much as a house or power line for 50 miles and the road got narrower. Some idiot motorcycle rider came around a curve at high speed in the middle of the road... Good thing Jacky was cruising below 25mph or we would have sent him to whatever place he goes after he departs earth... He wobbled all over and Jacky braked hard... Lucky rider, that one. We drove away from the creek and crested the summit where Mt. Jefferson hove into view and we were not quite as lost.. The GPS started doing its thing as if it had not been stupid and lost. Now we found ourselves about 12 down, hill miles from hwy 22. The road began widening again and a centerline appeared... a small stream meandered along 22 as we headed north toward Detroit Lake.. The road was a pleasant drive and the stream turned into a river... The Santiam, I think. From here to Albany the GPS lady took us over back road short cuts that wound through hills and farm land. A very nice drive.

Roads drawn blue on a triple A map are paved but size and windiness are not shown.

Free Long Distance phone calls

GOOGLE VOICE

ron thomas
I have been experimenting with Google Voice which is a new program from google that will let you make calls, toll free, from any phone in the USA. It takes messages when you don't answer and transcribes them and then forwards them to your email account. It has many features that normal phones do not have. You pick a phone number from them and you can use it as a stand alone or it can be set to ring every phone number that you currently have.. i.e, rings cell phone and home home phone and business phone simultaneously. No matter where you are or which phone you are using.

It is free. It calls many overseas numbers for .02cents a minute but the US is free. Want to try it? Need help setting it up?
Watch the video below. Still need help? Contact me teckron@gmail.com
and we will get together and I help you through the process.

Google Reader (79): "People denied coverage because they suffer an existing condition will also see important changes. The Oregon Health Authority has announced a new insurance program for uninsured Oregonians with existing medical conditions.

This program isn't a freebie. Those seeking coverage will pay premiums ranging from $221 to $714 a month, but these premiums would be higher if not for a federal subsidy provided by the legislation approved by Congress earlier this year. Those who qualify will see their out-of-pocket expenses limited to about $6,000 a year. Once again, this will be a steep price for many, but it is certainly better than being denied coverage at any price because of an already existing medical condition."

You were on your way home when you died.
It was a car accident. Nothing particularly remarkable, but fatal nonetheless. You left behind a wife and two children. It was a painless death. The EMTs tried their best to save you, but to no avail. Your body was so utterly shattered you were better off, trust me.
And that’s when you met me.
“What… what happened?” You asked. “Where am I?”
“You died,” I said, matter-of-factly. No point in mincing words.
“There was a… a truck and it was skidding…”
“Yup,” I said.
“I… I died?”
“Yup. But don’t feel bad about it. Everyone dies,” I said.
You looked around. There was nothingness. Just you and me. “What is this place?” You asked. “Is this the afterlife?”
“More or less,” I said.

Several people that are interested in the Alaska cruise have mentioned to Dee an and I that they are hesitant about making a reservation because the time is so far out and they are afraid of loosing there deposit. I have some information that you can pass on in the blog.
1. The deposit is fully refundable up until 90 days before sailing when full payment is required. After that some penalties are incurred.
2. The whole purpose of booking rooms early is the ability to pretty much pick the room you want, on the side of the ship you want, in the location (front, mid, rear) of the ship. Want to be near an elevator?, request the one you want. If it's not listed, call the agent.
3. Deposit is only $250.00 per person or $500.00 per cabin.
4. If possible illness is a concern, here again, your deposit is fully refundable (see no.1. above)

An email from Wayne Hill

Ron
You have mentioned in the past that you miss the computer discussion we used to do on Tuesdays (I think) at the clubhouse. It would be great to revisit having a day (once a week, every other week, or just once a month) where we could get together with others to share things we have learned or ask questions about issues. Like right now, I have questions about what advantage Google Voice may hold. Other questions might be what is the best internet provider. Such a meeting may include other "tech" questions or issues.

For the folks that don't recall those meetings they were a get together of computer interested people that met with their laptop computers at the clubhouse where we would discuss ideas and demonstrate how to do stuff that we were interested in that day. There was no time limit, you left when you felt like it... sort of a friendly group meeting with not much structure. You did not have to come unless you wanted to. If you are interested check the three stars box below this article.
