Oregon Department of Parks & Recreation Whale Watching Spoken Here volunteer Larry Bordner scans the ocean from Don Davis Park in Newport for signs of migrating gray whales.
Winter Whale Watch Week runs through Jan. 1. Trained volunteers at 26 sites along the coast educate visitors about whales and with luck, help them spot a blow spout or even one breaching or sticking its head out of the water in what is known as a “spy hop.” About 18,000 gray whales migrate from the Bering Sea to their breeding grounds around Baja, Mexico every December and January.
