Dudley Trip

From Wayde and Barbara Dudley:
We left Savannah, Georgia on September 27th and headed for Atlanta after playing golf at the Bacon Ranch Golf Course in Savannah. It was a nice way to end our stay in Savannah.
We saw $1.99 gas outside of Macon, Georgia. We have been paying between that and $2.20, but that is the cheapest we have found.
We stayed in Conyers, Georgia which is just outside of Atlanta as that is where the Glock pistol match will be held that Wayde is competing in. We checked in that afternoon and, luckily, there was a Cracker Barrel within walking distance so we went there for supper. I don't know if any of you have been to a Cracker Barrel restaurant. They are great and we eat at one every time we get the chance.
The next day we went into Atlanta. It is very big and very busy but, thanks to our GPS unit, NUVI, we got around fairly easily. It would be impossible to to put into words the help we've had from our NUVI. When I think how it would have been if I had been looking at a map, trying to give Wayde directions and telling him which exit to turn on, I shudder. We can certainly recommend them.
We first toured the World of Coke. Coca-Cola was invented in the late 1800's in Atlanta and that is where their world headquarters are. Coke actually hasn't changed that much but it certainly has seen a lot of America's history. It was really an interesting museum.
We passed the Georgia Dome football stadium, the Turner Broadcasting complex and Georgia Tech, home of the Yellowjackets, to name a few places.
We then went to the Margaret Mitchell museum. The museum is housed in the apartment complex she lived in when she wrote "Gone With the Wind." She hurt her leg and couldn't get around so her husband talked her into writing a "little book". She did and the rest is history. She was a feminist, a flapper, and quite a forward thinker for her times. I was quite impressed with all she did before she became famous and all she did after her success. She donated a lot to the Black community but had to do it annonymously as it would have really been frowned on in the 1930's south.
A tour guide recommended a small sports bar down the street from the museum. We went to Jock and Jill's and had a really great lunch. Wayde went to the men's restroom and was pleasantly surprised to see a poster of Coach Billotti (U of O football coach) on the wall signed by Coach Billotti with "Go Ducks" written on it. Since we moved to Longview Hills from Eugene and are big Duck fans, we really enjoyed it.
We then drove through Marietta, Georgia, and saw several beautiful old homes. We went from there to the Kennesaw Mountain Civil War battle site. It was, as all Civil War battle sites are, interesting, moving and very sad. The museum chronicled the entire Civil War. What a sad time in our history.
