Oregon Medicare Advice Program Receives Federal Grant - Salem-News.Com: "(SALEM, Ore. ) - A state program that uses volunteers to offer free, unbiased help to people making Medicare decisions this month received a $417,631 federal grant to continue outreach to Oregonians in 2007.
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services grant goes to the Senior Health Insurance Benefits Assistance (SHIBA) network and will allow the program to expand its volunteer network into several underserved rural areas of Oregon."

Charles Rohde
Charles passed away Sunday morning at the hospital. As his family draws together from all over the world and country ... Think good thoughts for him and his wife Ruth during this time of transition.
The possibility of a memorial service at the clubhouse was mentioned to us by a friend of the family.

Walk!!
Well, we were out of shape and in shape and all shades of color in between. It was fun. Talking with folks while we walked made it very enjoyable and as we passed the time yaking we all did more than we thought we could. We watched out for one another and when someone looked like they had enough we called on the radio and put them in the bus and took them home.
A good system.. Certainly better than finding yourself stranded and out of oomph. Also, we watched out for one another and did not let anyone over do.
I have walked many trails around town and have a couple of favorites that would be just right. One is the Hatfield Museum trail which is flat and about a mile. There are benches along the way to rest and watch the birds in the salt marshes. There are a couple of pick up points for those that tire and it would be a great outing. As a bonus the trail includes a full skeleton of a gray whale. Cameras are a must. Sorry, dogs are not allowed. We would have the van to pick you up when you get tired and return you to your car.. Just use your FRS radio.

Authorities on the Oregon Coast were trying to figure out the best way to deal with a 40-foot Gray Whale that washed up on the beach near Newport over the weekend.

The 40-foot California Gray Whale washed up near Seal Rock sometime Saturday night or Sunday morning.
David Woody, a Beach Ranger for the Oregon State Parks Department, said the adult California Gray Whale washed up on shore near Seal Rock sometime late Saturday night or early Sunday morning.
Woody said it appeared the animal had been dead for at least a few days. He said the Coast Guard actually spotted it about five miles offshore Saturday afternoon.
Woody reports that the whale had washed ashore started coming in about 7:00 a.m. Sunday."

Longview Hills Walking Course...
Next MONDAY, May 28th at 9:00AM Meet us at the clubhouse and get your walking shoes on Mama.. We are stepping out on our new health walking course laid out by Wayde Dudley and Bill Furgason today. It is accurate to a cat's whisker as they used GPS and a special program Wayde has on his computer.
They have markers with yellow ribbons on stakes at 1/4 mile intervals so you know how far you've gone. There are arrows on the street to tell you which way to turn.The whole thing is a mile and a half. It can be moderately difficult or you can just do the more flat course.... Look for a map of the course on the bulletin Board soon.
So you can only walk a little way... not a problem .. Just use your FRS radio to call for a pick up and a volunteer will pick you up in a car and take you back to the clubhouse or home whichever you wish.

BOSTON — Staples is expanding its electronics waste recycling program by accepting used computers and monitors that can now be dropped off for a $10 fee at any of the office products chain's 1,400 U.S. locations during store hours.
The step by the world's largest office products supplier follows similar initiatives by many computer makers and retailers to confront the growing environmental and public health risk posed by discarded computers and other electronic gadgets containing toxic metals and chemicals.
Framingham-based Staples on Monday planned to announce the expansion of a four-year-old program allowing customers to drop off smaller devices such as cellphones, pagers and digital cameras for free, regardless of the brand or whether the device was bought at Staples.
Free recycling for those devices will continue at Staples' U.S. and Canadian stores. Starting Monday, desktop and laptop computers and monitors of any make will also be accepted at Staples' customer service desks during store hours, but for a $10 fee for each large item."

We have 2 new journalists studying how our website works. They each have an exact copy of this website that they can experiment on. Those sites are closed to all but the three of us. We meet for an undetermined amount of time during the week and get deep into the workings of the website. I will take them as far as they want to go.
The good news for the community is this website is about to change. There will be more diversity in the articles. I'm hoping you will see more of a woman's slant on stories as both of our future webmasters are ladies. Keep an eye out for change. One positive change is both ladies are learning how to keep the Birthday list upto date. Doesn't sound hard but it is.
Look for change as we revitalize our website.

NEW IDEA!!!!!
Another Idea for folks that are interested or are home bound and would like an important and fun hobby.. What is it? You could keep the community up to date on local events and developments of major importance.
Become a Neighborhood Watch Scanner Dog... HUH?
We are interested in establishing a club that monitors all the important radio frequencies for information that is important for residents to know. That information would be broadcast by you on our local Neighborhood Watch CH 6.
What is a scanner? This is a radio receiver that scans through all the frequencies you care to listen to like the fire dept, police, Coast Guard, local HAM radio, PUD, Newport Airport, Lincoln County emergency communications, etc. (most can set up a hundred different channels to listen to)... You dial the frequencies in that you want.. the scanner checks them waiting for one of them to transmit and then stops and lets you listen.
Sounds technical doesn't it? Not to worry there are Scanner dogs in the park that will set up your scanner for you and show you how to work it. From that point on you just turn it on and listen.
Well, you don't want to go to the expense of buying a scanner to find out if you are interested only to have to turn around and sell it because it isn't what you thought? I'm a trusting soul.. I'll loan you mine and let you use it for a day and night then you return it to me and you can decide if this is something you would like to do.
What's in it for me? More ears listening for Neighborhood Watch. The community becomes safer as a result... Let me know... RT
