SOUTH BEACH CEMETERY CLEAN UP

IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!

The Lincoln County Historical Society is having a cleanup for South Beach Cemetery on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Several members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club showed an interest and have signed up at the SOLV website. The Historical Society is working with SOLV on this cleanup. Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of it because they can use all the help they can get. For those of you who have never visited the South Beach Cemetery, it is really overgrown with trees and brush. Some of the graves are from the 1800's so it is certainly a piece of history worth preserving.

You are all invited to a brief meeting on Thursday, May 7 at the Burrows House (545 SW 9th St., the only Queen Anne Victorian on the block) at 10:00 am. In addition to the planning of tasks, theywill be going over some of the SOLV safety points and registration forms. They will go over these again at the site on Saturday morning as well.

Anyone who is able to help with this event on Saturday are advised to wear sturdy footwear, bring work gloves and clippers or pruning shears if you have them.

If you have any questions, just give Loretta a call (265-7509). Again, they would appreciate any help you can give.

Thanks so much,

Barb

A Battle to Preserve Wardenclyffe, Tesla’s Bold Failure - NYTimes.com: "In 1901, Nikola Tesla began work on a global system of giant towers meant to relay through the air not only news, stock reports and even pictures but also, unbeknown to investors such as J. Pierpont Morgan, free electricity for one and all."

Mind - Stumbling Blocks on the Path of Righteousness - NYTimes.com: "In recent years, social psychologists have begun to study what they call the holier-than-thou effect. They have long known that people tend to be overly optimistic about their own abilities and fortunes — to overestimate their standing in class, their discipline, their sincerity."

Vacation Report from Jim and Bonnie Rose

Hello
And how is your VACATION in "Sunny California" doing. Hope you are enjoying the heat and all those people, not to mention just a touch of traffic too. Our VACATION is just great here in Atlanta we have none of that. Our nice warm sunshine turned into rain, with heavier rain along with a few thunder showers, mixed in with a touch of tornado. The weather report is you guessed it more rain, etc, etc, I almost feel like we are back home without the ocean. So far we have been able to keep our socks dry, but that will depend if we run out of socks or not. Drop us a line let us know how your VACATION is going.
See you soon
Jim

Loyalty Days 2009

Most of you know about Newport's annual celebration of Loyalty Days. For those of you who are newcomers to the area, it is an event which started in Newport after WWII to honor all veterans. There was a "March of 1,000 Flags" on Thursday night. Wayde and I joined our friend Candy Garrison (many of you know Candy from the LVH Fishing Club, NPD Police Volunteers and CERT) and we joined the march. We parked our truck under the bridge on the south side and then walked across to the north side. I might add that if you have never walked the bridge across the Yaquina River it is a beautiful view from the top and well worth the effort. In any event, we joined everyone on the north side where we each collected our flag. We started the walk going across the bridge until we were stretched from one end to the other. At that time a Coast Guard helicopter flew by and took the picture. Wayde, Candy and I were in the middle of the bridge and I was sorry I wasn't able to see the sight from below and hope some of you were able to. It must have really been something. Candy and I had an emotional moment when a car passed by driven by an elderly lady. Her passenger was a gentleman, looked to be in his late 90's, who had an oxygen tube going into his nose. The thing that got us was the fact he was sitting up so very straight, had his army hat on, and was saluting all of us with flags as he drove across the bridge.

It was a wonderful experience and one we hope to repeat next year.

"This country has come to feel the same when Congress is in session as when the baby gets hold of a hammer."

Just a thought...

How do you tell sick people to stay home when the loss of a day's income is devastating? How much do waiters/waitresses, cooks and retail people get paid?

If you are raising a family and they are depending on you to provide shelter, clothing and food... Your job pays just enough or not even enough to meet those basic goals and pays no sick pay... What would you do?

I know what I did as the breadwinner in the family... Suck it up and go to work.

This is why the Swine Flu will spread.

What can you do? Stay Home? You gotta come out sometime... You have needs and you will come out. Use the comments link below this article... Tell us what you would do.

At former British prison, Somali pirates tell their side | McClatchy

At former British prison, Somali pirates tell their side | McClatchy: "That a few hundred men like these have wreaked so much havoc in the seas off of East Africa is a testament to the sheer power of guts and greed. It's also a stark illustration of the all-consuming anarchy ashore in Somalia, where, after 18 years of conflict, jobs are scarce, guns are plentiful, men will risk everything for a payday — and their government is too weak and corrupt to stop them."

A Credit Card Bill of Rights | The Exception Magazine

A Credit Card Bill of Rights | The Exception Magazine: "On April 30th, the House of Representatives passed H.R. 627, the Credit Cardholders’ Bill of Rights Act. This bill contains a number of common sense provisions like banning retroactive interest rate hikes on existing balances, double-cycle billing, and due-date gimmicks. The bill would also increase the advance notice of impending rate hikes, giving cardholders the information they need to make decisions about their financial well-being."
