VANCOUVER -- After listening to horror stories Thursday about the new Medicare Plan D for drugs, U.S. Sen. Patty Murray declared the plan a nightmare but warned not to expect improvements from the president or Congress.

'They have said no changes unless they hear from the people,' said the Washington Democrat. 'We have to get the word out.'

The plan, approved in 2003, is intended to help senior citizens and people with disabilities buy prescription drugs through Medicare. It began Jan. 1 and is administered through private insurance companies, with a May 15 deadline for signing up. Proponents and drug companies say it will lower overall prescription costs."
