Making Neighborhood Watch Work....

There are events that happen in our Neighborhood that don't seem right but we are reluctant to call the police to handle them... Sort of a fear of "crying wolf" at what may be nothing at all. Yet the premise of a good Neighborhood Watch with a police partnership as they work together to keep each other informed.

We have the means, probably better than any community in the United States, to develop that relationship and grow a close partnership with our local police.

As you know the LVH Neighborhood Watch radio network is in place now with 50 residents having radios and more coming soon we hope. With the dedication of neighbors such as Ruthanne Carson, Jackie Memoli, Wayne and Liz Hill, Marlene Crites and Coach (Rod) McCready and a lot of others, this net is on and listened to 24/7 most of the time.

We have people in our Neighborhood Watch Patrol vehicles that are willing to go and look at a suspicious circumstance and get descriptions and license numbers when called by the net. We have a CERT team that will respond to a call for help over our net (and has).

Now we are going to add a new element that will increase our partnership with Newport Police. A copy of this article is being sent to our Police Chief, Mark Miranda so that he can help foster this new relationship.

The Newport Police Dept. (NPD) has a website with many pages dedicated to keeping the public informed about the departments activities. But, they have one page that was made for use by people like you and me to report the unusual activity you may witness in our neighborhood. This page, when filled out by you goes to a police officer for review and then is entered into the police patrol book for future reference. If anything bad happens our police have that information to help them make an arrest. Simple. If you are afraid to put your name down on the form you don't have to (but you should I think). You could ask someone on the radio to make an entry also, I would do that and so would others.

Well now it is time for you to visit the NPD report form and take a look. You can even fill it out just be sure to mark it TEST. At the bottom it says "SUBMIT" it's ok to click that.. Your data is transferred to an email form on your computer and if you press send it goes to the NPD If you don't it will not go.

A CERT Request....

Sometimes what we can do for you is the best thing you can do for us.

The Longview Hills CERT (Community Emergency Response Team). The CERT team is continuously evolving their training every week on Wednesday at the clubhouse training sessions. No other team in Lincoln County trains every week, just ours.

We are dedicated to helping you and now we can ask you to help the CERT Team. We have been working on cutting wasted time wherever we find it. Time is critical in rescue work. Minutes gained mean lives saved.

To save time and direct teams to the exact locations they need to be we are using lot numbers (your mail box number). While addresses in the park can be confusing and streets that houses have their addresses on is certainly confusing, your lot number is unique to your location. Nobody else has the same number.

To help us we ask that you allow a CERT team member to place your lot number on your front yard, globe light, post. The numbers are small and will go directly on the post. They will be placed with care and not be obtrusive. The numbers are white vinyl and are reflective. We are doing this as a free service to our community.

We know the light post is your property and we would not dream of just doing this without permission. So, we will only put your lot number on your post if you sign up for it on the clubhouse bulletin board.

Want to see what it will look like before you decide? Ron & Jacky Thomas and Ben Davi on Windmill dr. have the new numbers on their posts.

The noise of the chipper goes on to the west of Longview Hills. This is from the clearing of timber from the new housing development going in next to our community. There was still a good size pile to go through the chipper, so the noise goes on and on.

FYI – Betty Hanus found a dead crow in her yard the other day. She contacted Environmental Health and they came and retrieved the bird. Betty was later contacted and advised that, after testing, the bird did not have West Nile Virus. There have been a few cases of West Nile found in Oregon and The Department of Environmental Health is keeping a close watch to prevent the virus from spreading. They appreciate any help they can get so if any of you find a dead animal, please call Environmental Health and report it ASAP.

Wednesday, July 18, 2007

The average Oregonian has to wonder how the ball was dropped so hard on U.S 20, the highway that has twisted and curved its way from Corvallis through Eddyville to Newport for years. Its winding route has been determined the cause of nine traffic deaths over the past ten years, although the breakneck speed at which many a current driver travels has be a contributing factor to the plethora of accidents along U.S. 20 and throughout every direct as well as twisty highway in the state."

She had been immobilized after breaking two ribs and cutting her foot during a powerful earthquake Monday that damaged homes across this northwestern city, driving her and some 450 other residents to the gym for shelter."

Japanese quake kills 9 - Asia-Pacific - MSNBC.com: "The 6.8-magnitude temblor killed at least nine people and injured more than 900 as it toppled hundreds of wooden homes and tore 3-foot-wide fissures in the ground. Highways and bridges buckled, leaving officials struggling to get emergency supplies into the region.

Some 10,000 people fled to evacuation centers as aftershocks rattled the area. Tens of thousands of homes were left without water or power."
