I went back over to the Lighthouse area today to get the update on the slide that occured yesterday afternoon and spoke to one of the workers, who stated the clean up will be done by days end.

Suppose we find out that one home owner needs oxygen another special medications and another a wheel chair? Or any other special need we can think of?
Here is an idea. We use the light posts to convey that information at a glance. We could use colored electrical tape. For instance a green stripe on the post would mean, “Needs Oxygen”. A red might indicate special medicine. Another might indicate pets... Stripes could be used or vinyl dots. It could be visible or unobtrusive. A number of dots might indicate how many occupants are normally there. The light post can be used to carry a whole lot of data at a glance eliminating the need to carry and shuffle lists during rescue operations.
The light post also has the distinction of being out of the danger of building structural damage. Of course each home owner would knowingly allow posting of such data but the homes that take this precaution would certainly be the first to be surveiled you would think..

The above slide happen at the entrance booth at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area here in Newport Thursday, Jan 12th at around 4PM. There was a employee inside the booth who has worked here for nine years, she stated she will never forget this day. She heard cracking noise shortly before the slide, she looked up and saw the hillside sliding toward her and with a sound like thunder. She was uninjured, and was able to get out of the booth to saftey by crawing out a window. Per the Newport Times reported the fee operation at Yaquina Head will be relocated to the vistiors center.

The 28-year-old right-hander made $390,000 last season, his fourth with Seattle. He was 3-6 with two blown saves, a 3.06 ERA, 52 strikeouts and 17 walks in a career-high 55 games. That likely would have been his third consecutive season with 50 appearances, had he not spent six weeks of 2004 on the disabled list with elbow tendinitis.
He is 8-8 with a 3.56 ERA, two saves, five blown saves, 181 strikeouts and 58 walks in 162 career games."

I 'm not sure what it is about the topic of major league baseball that instantly divides Portland, but that is the prevailing dynamic.
Unfortunately, the dialogue crumbles into a baseball vs. schools harangue faster than Ichiro Suzuki can run to first base. That is what happened this week when Portland Mayor Tom Potter raised the specter of school funding after being asked about public financing for a big league ballpark.
I talked to Potter on Wednesday. I respect him for being cautious about committing tax dollars to a stadium. But he's in left field when he immediately invokes the school-funding issue. Oregon schools will face a fiscal crisis whether baseball comes here. Our state's flawed tax structure guarantees that. "

Our New Computer Lab
Our New Computer Lab Update...
We are moving ahead in the ultimate goal of establishing a first rate computer lab at the club house. A place for learning.. Seniors helping Seniors. Neighbor helping neighbor. Folks learning how to use the internet. Learning new ways to play exciting games. Learning and learning. A computer Club meeting place that we can really talk computers at. Teachers with the knowledge are coming forward and signing on.. Already we have Sid Adkins and Donna Davi... Me too.
We talked to Larry Henson yesterday and got our project all lined up the way that it will be supported by management. Here is the jist of what is going to happen. Where the old computers are now is where the lab will remain. The exercise equipment will be moved to another location. All the old computer equipment that is in that room now with the exception of the nice 17” monitor that Bill Holt donated and the current printer in use will be given away at a drawing. There are 3 functional computers there now. They have either Windows98 or 95 on them. The remaining equipment such as monitors and printers will also be raffled off. The computer now in use for the internet will remain until we have a new one programmed to take its place and then it will be raffled.
A call is going out now for a wood worker or two in the park to come and help build movable computer stands like the one that is in the computer lab now.
You have seen the list of programs and operating system that Jim Dodds is going to install on the (new to us) computers in a below article. He wanted to know which ones we wanted. I told him the latest operating system he has and WinWord and Excel. Also, a lot of games. If any of you have looked at the list and want something special ... Now is the time to comment below.. Jim reads this site and will see your request.
What we don’t want is end up with a mess in our lab. We want everything to have a place and be in it. Also, the lab should not be used as a dumping ground for old equipment so we are requesting you ask before bringing in any treasures.
Also, we will have one computer located in our library area where folks can use it if classes are going on.. Who knows? Maybe a volunteer will catalogue all of our books and it can be used for that purpose too.
Jim Dodds has also drawn a diagram of the way we are going to hook up the computers into a network. I believe it eventually will be a combination of Ethernet (cabling) and WiFi (wirelss). We need the supplies to do that right now and it’s going to cost about $300. Nope, I don’t know where the money is coming from... I’m hoping you will tell me.
When the system is up and ready we will need one Charter high speed internet connection. One connection will allow all the 10 computers to go on the internet at the same time. And they can each go their own way. If we add a wifi access point down the road. Any computer (such as a laptop with a wifi card) will also be able to access the internet even with all the other computers doing it at the same time. Usually a network can handle around 250 computers at once so there is virtually no limit as far as we are concerned. This one connection will be an ongoing expense to the Social Club and I will have a cost for that item soon.

Sony brings a new dimension to the electronic book with its new Sony Reader. Measuring just 6.9' x 4.9' x .5', it holds up to 80 average sized books at a time. Sony will be happy to sell you a memory stick or SD card to give you room for more.

Illinois will pay for medications for impoverished seniors and disabled consumers who are having problems getting prescriptions filled under Medicare's vast new drug program, officials announced Wednesday.
The state's plan goes into effect immediately and will last until Medicare and private drug plans fix systems that aren't working properly, said Anne Marie Murphy, chief of Illinois' Medicaid program.
'The governor wants to make sure that [poor seniors] aren't turned away from the pharmacy without their drugs,' Murphy said. Pharmacies can now fill prescriptions for these consumers with the assurance that they'll be paid, she added."

The ash from Augustine Volcano was not expected to reach Anchorage, the state's most populous city nearly 200 miles to the northeast, meteorologists said.

A place where you can go on line and look up our folks to connect the name with the face. He started with two pictures and now has another 4 lined up. He has ambitions of covering the entire community and even publishing a loose leaf binder for the clubhouse. A great project.
He will be calling more and more folks soon. Of course you don’t have to have your picture taken nor do you have to have anything written about you. The choice will be strictly up to you. However, I would like to point out that it is highly unlikely you could take a worse picture than mine so don’t use that excuse (.

As we discussed earlier I can install Windows 2k Professional on the computers and Windows 2K Professional Server on the server. I will also install Norton AV 2006 on each box at no charge. Below is a small list of software I can also put on them if you want. I will need about 2 weeks to do all of them, maybe longer, one a day as you know once the OS and AV are loaded it's off to update land with the reboot after reboot after reboot. I also have a bunch of like card games ect. not listed - also depends on the boxes hard drive sizes. I would perfer to have all the boxes at one time even the one you don't think works, maybe I can do something with it. So give me a call.

HANDI-HINT TIME..
We went to Salem today and on the way over we were having that blurred window problem you get from road film build-up with your windows being streaked and all. Some folks try their windshield washer on it with limited success.
We have always bought a canned coke at a service station or carry one with us. Simply poor the coke on your windshieled and rub it in with the service station squeegee and then squeege it off. When you go back into the rain the coke is rinsed from the car and your windows will be sparklingly clear.
Why? I don't really know but was once told it's the acid in the coke.

Before long we will all need to buy a boat. Just remember be safe if you have to get out in this rain and high winds.

It's called "Car Talk", these two guys are on for one hour of great information and you will enjoy it very much. Ladies you will enjoy it to, this is not just a guy thing. Snow, the father of major league baseball player J.T. Snow, succumbed to complications from a staph infection.
The Long Beach, CA native currently ranks fifth on the Rams' all-time list for yards receiving (6,012), seventh on the team's all-time receptions list (340) and fifth with 45 career touchdown receptions.
Snow, who retired after the 1975 season, served as wide receivers coach for the Rams in 1982. Snow had been in broadcasting ever since.
He was also named to every All-America team after breaking most of the pass receiving records at Notre Dame. "

My Grandfather was my father and my best pal when I was growing up. From him I learned what loyalty, respect and genuine love really is. What I am today, he taught me by living the example. He used to come to the house and take me fishing...carp fishing! He didn't care about frying and eating fish, just catching them and then throwing them back, but mostly just taking me fishing. In the early days, my Grandfather worked in the mill for fifteen cents an hour, lived in one of the two room mill houses and raised three daughters alone. Much later, he was a prison guard for the State."

Heard the winds are to get up to around 60 mph along the coast, we have move storms moving in all this week. Great time to watch the ocean when we have these strong storms and see the large waves. Be Safe!

As Oregon State heads home this week for games against No. 21 Arizona on Thursday and Arizona State on Saturday, the Beavers are a different team from the one that opened Pacific-10 Conference play on the road two weeks ago.
The Beavers (8-6, 1-2 Pac-10) have smoothed over several of the rough edges that plagued them early in the season and are figuring out the best way to play to their strengths.
There are still blemishes, but if the Beavers can hold the turnovers downs, keep their big men out of foul trouble, and continue their torrid shooting (51.0 percent through three conference games -- all on the road), they are going to have a chance to win on most nights.
Everything fell into place for the Beavers in Saturday's 72-64 victory over California at Haas Pavilion in Berkeley, Calif. The Beavers shot 54.0 percent from the field, had four players score in double figures, held their own on the backboards, controlled the ball and the tempo and won a Pac-10 road game for the first time in almost two years.
'There's no question it was a great win,' Beavers coach Jay John said. 'We enjoy this, we go home, we finally get to play at home, and this one's over.' "

McMillan went into Sunday's drizzly night wondering if anyone on his team could play defense. The Heat (20-15) ran what center Theo Ratliff called 'a layup drill' against the Blazers, as guards Dwyane Wade (31 points), Jason Williams (20 points) repeatedly drove unimpeded toward the basket, helping the Heat shoot 58.8 percent from the field.

Awful. Pitiful. Terrible. Quit.
They were all words used by the Trail Blazers to describe their play Sunday night during a 118-89 loss to Miami, the Blazers' second-worst defeat in Rose Garden history.
A dazed coach Nate McMillan spent much of his postgame meeting with the media struggling to complete his sentences, and when he did, he used the harshest of words that questioned the team's ability, effort and fight. Ultimately, the coach said he will consider changing his starting lineup.
'You have to,' McMillan said. 'We've lost six in a row, and we have to look at trying to find a way to get the spark back and keep competing.'
McMillan went into Sunday's drizzly night wondering if anyone on his team could play defense. The Heat (20-15) ran what center Theo Ratliff called 'a layup drill' against the Blazers, as guards Dwyane Wade (31 points), Jason Williams (20 points) repeatedly drove unimpeded toward the basket, helping the Heat shoot 58.8 percent from the field.

COMPUTER PROJECT UPD
COMPUTER PROJECT UPDATE...

As we said in our last report We received 10 newer Pentium 3 computers from Georgia Pacific thanks to the efforts of Donna Talarski and the generosity of her employer.
We believe the setup of these computers is going to be key to teaching computer classes to our community. Also we can see folks meeting to play inter network games with one another. In other words “Fun & Games”. We have 4 volunteers that are happy to teach computers. We have some folks that are volunteering to put the lab together. We have one that may load many new features on to the computer.
However, we thought before we put the cart and the horse together we should really check and see if these computers work. So, today Jim Rose and I checked them all out. Here is our findings.
Phase 1
We would like to put 6 of them into what is called the card / craft room now. That is where the classes would be held. Another out in the main social area of the clubhouse. One where the exercise room is now. One in reserve or up for a drawing. The others now in use would be given away in a drawing to folks in our community. You should know that they are older models and are slow.
Management will of course have a say in their location. We also will be having to move the books in the craft room to another location if we proceed in this manner. You can see there are a lot of “ifs” here.
Jim Dodds has volunteered to load these computers with a newer operating system and maybe some programs but there may be some costs involved in that. We encourage Jim to send us what he thinks can be done and what it will take to get it done.
Cabinet builders in the park are encouraged to help so that our computer room has a place for everything and is neat.
This generally will be the completion of phase one of our project. At this point we can start having classes and club meetings on these computers.. While this is happening........
Phase two will take place with the forming of a new computer club in which newbies and old hands will be equally asked to join. The club will assume the project of getting the computers networked together and acquiring software for the club and community. They will also find a way to acquire a high speed internet connection that will be linked to all the computers whether by a wifi router or Ethernet cable or a combination of both. Once the computers are networked they can all go on the internet from just one connection and they can all do it at the same time.
Phase Three of this project calls for WiFi internet to be set up in this community. With wifi here residents would pay a greatly reduced fee (less than a quarter of what is currently being billed to residents of high speed internet from Charter). There are many technical and legal problems to overcome but the end result will give everyone access to the internet at a reasonable cost.
These projects can all be going on simultaneously or one at a time. We have broken them down so there isn’t such a big bite to chew at once.

- 9 of the 10 computers work. One seems to have a power supply problem.
- All of the mice and keyboards work.

A Great Community Strength at LVH
Yesterday we came again into what we consider the greatest strength of our little community. Working together for the common good. It took four people 5 hours to put up the Christmas Decorations. It took 25 people 15 minutes to take them down, pack them away and store them.
Awhile back it took 1 person, then the next day 2, then the next day 5 to clean a yard of a neighbor down on their luck. This started an avalanche of yard work to help those less fortunate with cash to pay for upkeep.. Until it culminated in the cleaning of a lakeside yard with about 35 people coming together to help on a day. Those 35 did in a couple of hours what would have taken weeks by one person.. Think of it only 2 hours!
A time ago 1 person started the numbers on the post lamps program.. soon it was two then 6 then a dozen.. Some wanted to beautify the project so the lamp posts were painted in addition to the numbers Then the project picked up speed extending throughout the community. Fees collected were deposited in the LVH treasury and we were prosperous because we came together for the common good of all.
There was a day that a neighbor painted her home trim a color offensive to some person who complained to management. The community in general gathered at her home when they learned she had spent most of her savings to make her home beautiful. She bought paint that was cleared through the manager but could not afford to hire help to paint because she was disabled. The community showed up again maybe 25 strong. The house was repainted in an hour and a half.
On another occasion.. The treasury at LVH was worrisomely depleting itself. The community came together and individuals and groups found ways they could make money from raffles to Casino Nights and house paintings. They were all successful. We now enjoy a splendid treasury to create the environment we want.
A three year project to gain computer literacy for our people has now begun to bear fruit and soon the efforts of many people will make that a reality.
The common thread that runs through all of these deeds is the coming together of residents for common good of all. Now we know that there are those that might feel guilty that they are not helping. Those people need to look at what they do. There are quite a few that have served as officers of the Social Club and are taking a well deserved rest. There are those that are an intracle part of the Neighborhood Watch and patrol. News writers, computer helpers, commenters, Librarians, Sunshine committees, paper printer, birthday keepers, all give to the community. All gain from their efforts. All are enriched and blessed. If you don’t see yourself here come along and join our happy village. It takes but a minute to join a club, to come to a potluck and break bread with new friends.. Let us hear your ideas or just vote what you think at the Social Club.
