That’s right, blood vessels. From a dinosaur. “Ho-ho-ho, I am excite-e-e-e-d,” she chuckles. “I am, like, really excited.”

After 68 million years in the ground, a Tyrannosaurus rex found in Montana was dug up, its leg bone was broken in pieces, and fragments were dissolved in acid in Schweitzer’s laboratory at North Carolina State University in Raleigh. “Cool beans,” she says, looking at the image on the screen."

ODOT working to prevent future U.S. 101 traffic delays

YACHATS - The Oregon Department of Transportation is working with the contractor hired to pave the section of Highway 101 between Waldport and Yachats to prevent future traffic delays.

Under the contract approved by ODOT and the contractor, LTM Inc., paving activities for the project may only occur between the hours of 7 p.m. and 7 a.m. ODOT specified the 12-hour, off-peak work period in order to keep delays minimal during the normal workday.

Paving operations for the project started at 5 p.m. Sunday, June 25, about 2 miles south of Yachats. Due to material delivery issues, the contractor worked past the 7 a.m. Monday deadline. The contractor continued work until about 3 p.m. Monday, causing 20-minute delays for motorists on this section of the highway. On Tuesday, the contractor again worked past the 7 a.m. deadline and did clear the work area until 9:30 a.m.

ODOT takes traffic mobility seriously and works hard to prevent traffic delays. Substantial financial penalties are allowed under the contract when deadlines are not met. ODOT has, and will, assess penalties anytime the paving work continues past the 7 a.m. deadline.

ODOT apologizes for any inconvenience to motorists and affected residents resulting from the contractor's inability to conclude paving operations in a timely manner. ODOT is working with the contractor to make sure deadlines are met.

If the weather cooperates, the paving should be completed by mid-August.

A new addiction for you to learn. Get that mind reved up and working. Just as you can become lost in a good book or a crossword puzzle so you can be absorbed into the world of Sodoku. This is a game that requires no numbers skills but it is played with numbers. You don't add them multiply or do anything like that but you find yourself absorbed in their positions relative to one another in a mind challenging puzzle. If you are bad at math, doesn't matter.. S0doku is not math but it is about numbers... Sounds strange huh?

Well the Davi's introduced me to the puzzles a couple of weeks ago and I have played an online version a few times. I am thinking that Donna could be convinced to show you how to do it sometime in the future... If you see her ask.

A must see for our community. There is a showing on television, 30 minutes long, that tells why the Pacific Northwest is due for a large earthquake and it shows how a tsunami will impact our coast. It shows how scientist are doing everything that they can to provide an early warning detection system. They make suggestions about what you can do. This Friday on the weather channel... Channel 54 for Charter Cable users. It's on the satelite channels also (we don't know the numbers for that). Times are 6:30pm, 9:30pm and 11:30pm. Please watch one of these showings. This is just one of the disasters our LVH CERT TEAM is trying to prepare our community for.

If you think it is all so much fal-der-rah... consider this... has your insurance company cancelled your earthquake insurance? All State cancelled ours and no longer will issue it... Why is that? Are they stupid? I think not. What do you think?

For everyones information the Davi's have found an insurance company that will insure your home against earthquake. Maybe they will comment here?

I have been going to Thompson's Sanitary Fill for the last few days, hauling off cuttings. While there I asked the prices to safely dispose of old computer equipment. $9 for a monitor and $6 for each other component. These things are really loaded with toxins please bite the bullet and dispose of them properly.

Consumers are willing to pay up to an extra £108 ($197) for a PC containing fewer chemicals, a survey has found.

People also feel manufacturers should take responsibility for the disposal of old machines, the research shows.

So-called e-waste is a growing global problem, with 30 million PCs being dumped each year in the US alone.

The study by Ipsos-Mori for Greenpeace coincides with an announcement by PC maker Dell to phase out a number of toxic chemicals in its products.

The nine-nation research found that UK computer users were willing to pay an extra £64 ($117), while people in China were prepared for spend up to £108 ($197) for a more environmentally sound PC.

A report published by the UN University in 2004 said making the average PC required 10 times the weight of the machine in chemicals and fossil fuels.

About 70% of heavy metals, such as lead and mercury, in landfill sites come from e-waste."

NAIROBI (AFP) - A baby hippopotamus that survived the tsunami waves on
the Kenyan coast has formed a strong bond with a giant male century-old
tortoise, in an animal facility in the port city of Mombassa, officials said.

The hippopotamus, nicknamed Owen and weighing about 300 kilograms (650
pounds), was swept down Sabaki River into the Indian Ocean, then forced back to
shore when tsunami waves struck the Kenyan coast on December 26, 2004 before
wildlife rangers rescued him.



"It is incredible. A-less-than-a-year-old hippo has adopted a male
tortoise, about a century old, and the tortoise seems to be very happy with
being a 'mother'," ecologist Paula Kahumbu, who is in charge of Lafarge Park,
told AFP.

"After it was swept and lost its mother, the hippo was traumatized. It
had to look for something to be a surrogate mother. Fortunately, it landed on
the tortoise and established a strong bond. They swim, eat and sleep together,"
the ecologist added. "The hippo follows the tortoise exactly the way it follows
its mother. If somebody approaches the tortoise, the hippo becomes aggressive,
as if protecting its biological mother," Kahumbu added.

"The hippo is a young baby, he was left at a very tender age and by
nature, hippos are social animals that like to stay with their mothers for four
years," he explained.

This is a real story that shows that our differences don't matter much
when we need the comfort of another. We could all learn a lesson from these
two creatures of God. Look beyond the differences and find a way to walk the
path together.

WILD CRITTERS ARE EVERYWHERE

Since most of us moved here from the city we forget that wild creatures are everywhere. Spending time at the Lincoln County Animal Shelter brings that point into focus daily. We have reports of a Bubba size Raccoon here in the park. Some of us probably think: okay so what? Well though Raccoons are cute to look at they can be deadly to our pets. A small dog or cat is no match for two Raccoons. Usually the only think left will be a small tuff of fur from your pet.

We are surrounded by forest and though it is lovely to look at it contains wild animals. This past Saturday the animal shelter had a report of a Panther citing on the Bay Road about ½ mile from Newport. We enjoy our view of the forest but remember we are the visitors not the animals. Let us be aware of our surroundings and protect the pets we care for and love.

The Calendar and the Posters on the bulletin board and the tickets for catered events...

As we wind down to elections of new officers I felt the need to curtail looking after those above events. It was fun figuring out how to apply computer technology and setting it up. We asked for volunteers to help but it all sounded so imtimidating so there were no takers. Finally, Jacky said she would learn how to do this stuff.

It all required patience and a few months of working the various systems. But as all things computer if you learn how to do something in one program you learn how to do it in all programs. So as your basic knowledge grows so does the more programs you can use grow.

Jacky has always been an artist. In point of fact in her large High School she was the editor of the school annual and when her art work was submitted in a national competition it came in second in that competition. She has catered many dinners and built hundreds of wedding cakes. Her creativity led her to own and run a gift shop in a tourist destination as well as create and manufacture gifts in another facility she built from the ground up . Her art and creativity has graced the shelves of bussineses and gift shops all over the United States.

When it came to the computer she balked, however. Finally, we sat together and she began to learn how to make posters and then tickets... She is having a ball. Now after my last months calendar errors she sat once again and started learning how to work the electronic calendar. Guess what? Since all the lessons she learned making posters apply to the calendar she learned how to run many features in about ten minutes. Last night she smugly announced she had updated the calendar and it was a piece of cake.

Of course she is sitting in again for another term as Activity Coordinator.. All these things have to do with art and I am happy she enjoys what she is doing for the coming year.

Meanwhile, this gives me some more time to pursue new activities such as the CERT team and The Community Emergency Plan, building websites for community organizations and other ideas bouncing around in my half empty head.

We are having fun now!
