Falls Among Elderly Often Caused by Inner-Ear Imbalance - TIME: "Most likely, things start going awry simply due to advancing age, Agrawal says. Smoking, hypertension and diabetes are also associated with higher rates of inner-ear balance problems. Fortunately, the condition is easily diagnosable in the doctor's office: patients are asked to stand on a firm padded surface and close their eyes. Without the ability to use touch and vision to stay balanced, patients who suffer from an inner-ear problem promptly fall down. The addition of that simple test to annual physicals, Agrawal says, 'would likely save millions of dollars and lives.'"

On Charles Burke
Jim Rose forwarded this email from Frida Burke
Hi
Charles is coming along pretty well after surgery, he is walking 4 times a day but tires easily. However, his heart has a mind of it's own and the doc is having trouble regulating his heart beat and his blood pressure, which has been very low. So, he is still hooked up to all the monitors and gadgets they have available to keep an eye on him. He might get the chest tubes taken out tomorrow. No word on when he will be discharged and if he will come home or go to rehab for awhile.
Charles is in room 2311 bed #2 if you liked to give him a call, I'm sure he would be happy to hear from you.

A young member of the CERT team that lives just across 101 from LVH brought this to our attention:
Two wolves.
One evening an old Cherokee told his grandson about a battle that goes on inside people.
He said, ' My son, the battle is between two ' wolves ' inside us all.
One is Evil. - It is anger, envy, jealousy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority, and ego.
The other is Good. - It is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindness, benevolence, empathy, generosity, truth, compassion and faith. '
The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather: ' Which wolf wins? '
The old Cherokee simply replied, ' The one you feed. '

For the unfamiliar, it’s a four-story, nearly century-old hotel on a bluff at Nye Beach. And is distinguished by its 22 rooms decorated in the spirit of 22 authors.
Feeling adventurous, I chose the room of Edgar Allan Poe, he of the neurotic obsession with mystery, death and ravens.
I confess, the pendulum above the bed with the blood-red covers was a tad unsettling, as was the stuffed raven. A storm tattered the window with rain. Just before retiring, I opened the guest book."

Some of you have written me to say that you read this blog every day. One of you pointed out that it is a slice of history for LVH. That was one of the goals for this blog... I will continue just as I have been while I can. Some of you should consider learning how to write on the site. It can be just as simple as sending what you want on it to a special email address I would give you. If you want to be more advanced and put pictures on... That takes about a half hour to learn. The blog would be more interesting with your input either in comments or stories you write or pictures you send...

Let me know?
Jacky was talking to me today... She mentioned in passing that nobody really reads this blog anymore. She is pretty in tune with the community...
So, I've been mulling over whether it's time to hang it up? I have more projects waiting on the sideline that I can put my attention to.
I wouldn't shut it down entirely... It has some really good links that people may still find helpful and a couple of residents like to put up articles and pictures once in awhile. I just wouldn't post news or videos anymore. If someone wants to take it over and head off in a new direction that would be fine to0. I would be glad to share what I have learned with anyone wanting to dabble in it.

New Kind of Rain
Since moving to Oregon 12 years ago, I have always been amazed at the number of adjectives the weathermen have to describe different kinds of rain. Today, I would like to suggest a new name...... Sunny Rain!
As I looked out at the sunny vista in my living room this morning I could hear rain hitting the skylight in the kitchen. Every day is an environmental adventure here, isn't it?

SOUTH BEACH CEMETERY CLEAN UP
IMPORTANT REMINDER!!!
The Lincoln County Historical Society is having a cleanup for South Beach Cemetery on Saturday, May 9 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. Several members of the Longview Hills Fishing Club showed an interest and have signed up at the SOLV website. The Historical Society is working with SOLV on this cleanup. Just wanted to make sure everyone was aware of it because they can use all the help they can get. For those of you who have never visited the South Beach Cemetery, it is really overgrown with trees and brush. Some of the graves are from the 1800's so it is certainly a piece of history worth preserving.
You are all invited to a brief meeting on Thursday, May 7 at the Burrows House (545 SW 9th St., the only Queen Anne Victorian on the block) at 10:00 am. In addition to the planning of tasks, theywill be going over some of the SOLV safety points and registration forms. They will go over these again at the site on Saturday morning as well.
Anyone who is able to help with this event on Saturday are advised to wear sturdy footwear, bring work gloves and clippers or pruning shears if you have them.
If you have any questions, just give Loretta a call (265-7509). Again, they would appreciate any help you can give.
Thanks so much,
Barb

Vacation Report from Jim and Bonnie Rose
Hello
And how is your VACATION in "Sunny California" doing. Hope you are enjoying the heat and all those people, not to mention just a touch of traffic too. Our VACATION is just great here in Atlanta we have none of that. Our nice warm sunshine turned into rain, with heavier rain along with a few thunder showers, mixed in with a touch of tornado. The weather report is you guessed it more rain, etc, etc, I almost feel like we are back home without the ocean. So far we have been able to keep our socks dry, but that will depend if we run out of socks or not. Drop us a line let us know how your VACATION is going.
See you soon

Loyalty Days 2009

Most of you know about Newport's annual celebration of Loyalty Days. For those of you who are newcomers to the area, it is an event which started in Newport after WWII to honor all veterans. There was a "March of 1,000 Flags" on Thursday night. Wayde and I joined our friend Candy Garrison (many of you know Candy from the LVH Fishing Club, NPD Police Volunteers and CERT) and we joined the march. We parked our truck under the bridge on the south side and then walked across to the north side. I might add that if you have never walked the bridge across the Yaquina River it is a beautiful view from the top and well worth the effort. In any event, we joined everyone on the north side where we each collected our flag. We started the walk going across the bridge until we were stretched from one end to the other. At that time a Coast Guard helicopter flew by and took the picture. Wayde, Candy and I were in the middle of the bridge and I was sorry I wasn't able to see the sight from below and hope some of you were able to. It must have really been something. Candy and I had an emotional moment when a car passed by driven by an elderly lady. Her passenger was a gentleman, looked to be in his late 90's, who had an oxygen tube going into his nose. The thing that got us was the fact he was sitting up so very straight, had his army hat on, and was saluting all of us with flags as he drove across the bridge.
It was a wonderful experience and one we hope to repeat next year.
uhmmm?

How do you tell sick people to stay home when the loss of a day's income is devastating? How much do waiters/waitresses, cooks and retail people get paid?
If you are raising a family and they are depending on you to provide shelter, clothing and food... Your job pays just enough or not even enough to meet those basic goals and pays no sick pay... What would you do?
I know what I did as the breadwinner in the family... Suck it up and go to work.
This is why the Swine Flu will spread.

Hartl also said that 12 of 18 samples taken from victims in Mexico showed the virus had a genetic structure identical to that of a swine flu virus found in California."

Commentary: High-speed rail is on horizon | McClatchy: "True high-speed rail is still far down the track, but President Barack Obama's blueprint for investing billions in rail has one big thing going for it: The Pacific Northwest is on it.
Obama's plan – which directs the spending of $8 billion in federal stimulus money and pledges to request another $1 billion annually for the next five years – represents the biggest federal commitment for passenger rail in decades."

Help us find the most interesting stories
This website is for the folks of LVH and those from afar that have an interest in what is happening in this part of the world.
Finding stuff that is interesting for everyone falls to just a couple of us... Barb Dudley and myself. Putting stuff in everyday is a pretty tough goal I have set myself. To do this I read many news sources in an effort to put something in. Most of what goes here is what I find interesting. But I would much rather put in things that interest you.
Quite awhile ago we installed a rating system below each article and below that a commenting area. It would help a lot if when we review the posts if there was a boxed checked or a comment left.... Then we would get a picture of what you want to see and hear about and could change the type of stories we put in for a better community interest fit.
To date, the most checked has been 3 in one box... Statistically not worth paying attention to. Most of the time there is none with an occasional one. Now if there were say 20 votes on an article... That would be an indicator that more or less of the stories would be appreciated or dumped based on which way the vote went. Commenting would help even more with specific criticism.
If you would care to check the box below an article with your opinion ... even if you decide it's not worth reading... Then that feedback will be used to make this Blog more interesting.

Life On Oregon Coast Lighthouse was 'Terrible'
Life On Oregon Coast Lighthouse was 'Terrible'
For generations, the Tillamook Rock Lighthouse has captured the imaginations of visitors to Seaside and Cannon Beach, sitting a distant one-mile away and remaining a mystery because it's the only Oregon lighthouse not accessible by walking up to it. It often disappears into the mists of the Pacific, given the right weather conditions, swallowed up by fog. Then it reappears, adding to the legends and mysteries already surrounding it, as new and old visitors conjure new tales to explain this mystifying presence just offshore."

Cascadia Earthquakes: Native American Myths and New Scientific Discoveries
Next Tuesday (21st) there will be a public presentation by Rob Witter and James Roddey from DOGAMI. It will be held at the Newport city hall council chambers on April 21 at 6:00pm. The session is open to the public. This should be one of the most authoritative, interesting, and informative talks on the subject.
The Presentation:
Native American oral histories speak of a great shaking followed by a massive flood that has struck our coast in the past. Japanese written records document an "orphan tsunami" that ravaged their coast 309 years ago. Today we know these accounts refer to the last great Cascadia Subduction Zone earthquake to strike the Pacific Northwest. We also know one of these mega-quakes and a massive tsunami could strike the Oregon coast at any time.
New scientific discoveries are also showing us that what we thought about these giant earthquakes may be all wrong. Join James Roddey and Rob Witter from the Oregon Department of Geology and Mineral Industries as they explore Native American legends, new geologic discoveries in one of the greatest scientific detective stories of the 20th century, all in order to understand what "The Big One" has in store for us.

LVH BOOK CLUB MEETING

About twenty guests attended the monthly meeting of the Longview Hills Book Club on Monday, April 13th. Ginger Stout started the meeting by picking the book selection for next month's meeting then Barb Dudley introduced the guest speaker, Michele Longo Eder.
Several of the people had already read Michele's book "Salt In Our Blood" but were treated to her reading a few excerpts as well as talking about the joys and heartache of being a Newport commercial fisherman's wife and mother. Besides being a successful attorney in Newport and now a local author, Michele is a friend of Longview Hills in that her father, Joe Longo, was a resident here before he passed away several years ago and she is a member of the LVH Fishing Club.
After reading the book and answering questions Michele signed her books for several guests who brought their copies to the meeting.
It was a truly memorable experience for all who attended. Ginger Stout has worked hard to get the LVH Book Club off the ground and it looks like it is now a bona fide success. Good job, Ginger!

College too expensive? Try YouTube - USATODAY.com: "The Google Inc.-owned YouTube has for the last few years been forging partnerships with universities and colleges. The site recently gathered these video channels under the banner YouTube EDU.
More than 100 schools have partnered with YouTube to make an official channel, including Stanford, MIT, Harvard, Yale and the first university to join YouTube: UC Berkeley.
There are promotional videos like campus tours, but the more interesting content is straight from the classroom or lecture hall. Many schools have posted videos of guest lecturers, introductory classes and even a full semester's course."

Avoiding Sugar Key to Ending to Senior Moments: Scientific American
Avoiding Sugar Key to Ending to Senior Moments: Scientific American: "Senior moments, those pesky instances of not so total recall—forgetting where we left our keys or what we did last weekend—are a subtle but significant part of the aging process. Another effect of growing old: rising blood sugar levels, which typically take off in our late 30s or early 40s as our bodies become less adept at metabolizing glucose in the bloodstream. Now a study has linked these rising levels with momentary forgetfulness, pinpointing exactly where in the brain the aging process acts—a finding that could help the elderly ward off memory lapses."

Feds declare GM, Chrysler not viable, refuse more aid | McClatchy: "The government offered a bleak assessment of the prospects for GM's much heralded Chevy Volt electric car, noting that GM was a full generation behind Toyota in 'green powertrain development.'
'While the Volt holds promise, it is currently projected to be much more expensive than its gasoline-fueled peers and will likely need substantial reductions in manufacturing cost in order to become commercially viable,' the government assessment said."
