LINCOM?

Last night a call came to you if you have a hardline telephone number in Newport.... It spoke about a community wide alert for a senior citizen that wandered off from home and was feared lost. You were asked to keep a watchful eye out and to notify police if you thought you saw the lady in question. The call was prefaced by saying it was from Lincom....

Lincom? What is that? Well, that acronym stands for Lincoln County Communications (LINCOM). This is the agency that radio dispatches and handles calls for all of our emergency responders in this community (i.e., 911) Why did they call you?

The city has been installing a reverse 911 telephone system and have been talking about it for sometime... They can put out a call to every phone in Newport in just minutes and make an announcement of critical importance. I beleive this was the first use of the system that I know of.

This is a cool use of communications technology that will benefit our entire community.

As an aside, We would like to point out to you that this was the type of system we spoke about buying for our LVH community to report community outages such as last weeks water outtage. This reverse 911 system, of course, is a more important system...

In the future, when they call listen and do what they tell you... If you don't have what they need just be aware of the announcement. This is a critical new tool ... Announcements of a tsunami. dangerous storm conditons, all manner of uses come to mind.

A real Fish story

This tidbit was emailed to me by the Fisherman's club... I think you will enjoy it as much as I did.

John,

Just wanted to pass on a little "fishing" story from today. Walt Chuck and I hit the water at about 0900. We dropped a couple of crab pots up by the green gas tank and then headed out with 2 more. We ran out NW of the north jetty tip and we were in about 50' of water. I was running the boat and Walt was running the crabbing gear. Just as he was getting ready to drop the last pot, something smacked into the side of the boat hard enough that it almost knocked him completely off of his feet and spun the bow of the boat around 180'. A Gray whale had come up and hit us on the port side, then rubbed the entire side of the boat and finished its roll at bow and blew!

Needless to say, we checked our pockets and teeth to make sure we had everything. After we realized what it was, we both acted like kids and just started yelling while pointing at the whale as it swam away from us and laughing our heads off. Talk about an adrenaline dump! I hope to not ever do that again!!!

I have scratches in the side of the boat in several places where the barnacles ran down the metal and vinyl. One of the scratches is deep enough in the aluminum that I will have to have it buffed out, as it could cut a line should one go across it.

Wayde and I had a truly enjoyable experience last Saturday night that I thought I would share with you. There is a Six Event Series For the Appreciation of Art Deco held the second Saturday of each month at the Ark in downtown Newport. We were a little unsure if we would be allowed in as we were greeted at the door by our very own Mike Larsen in a tux!!! I was afraid I was seriously underdressed in my sweatshirt and levis but Mike assured me it would be fine. You can tell by the photo above that my concerns were soon put to rest.

As you walk through the door it is like entering another time and place. You expect to see Rick (Humphry Bogart) standing by the piano, and the music playing could be from the 1930's or 1940's. In fact, I had to blink twice when I saw this good looking young man in a white suit dancing with a beautiful woman down on the dance floor. There were comfortable chairs and tables of all shapes and sizes situated around the room with a warm fire blazing in the wood stove. You could go up the bar and get a glass of your favorite wine or, in our case, we got coffee. Mine was Cafe Vienna with whipped cream and a sprinkle of nutmeg and cinnamon on top! It was perfect. We then were treated to a cartoon and newswreel from 1930, a short with Our Gang from 1934 and a serial with Crash Corrigan from 1936. There was even a short PSA from the March of Dimes with Judy Garland and Mickey Rooney from 1939! The movie was from 2008, "Miss Pettigrew Lives For a Day", however, the book was written in and the movie was set in 1939 London. It was one of those 1930's screwball comedies that has fantastic costumes and sets and was very well done.

Even though we didn't win the Trivia Challenge, we had a wonderful evening and would certainly recommended it to everyone who would like to step back in the past for a few hours a month. For more information check out the City Center Newport Association, Inc. at citycenternewport.com.

There is Another Way!

Well, it is painfully evident for some of you, that traveling up or down Windmill dr. when there is ice is just something you are going to do. Some of you have been stuck there and had to be towed out.. Some had to wait for ice to melt... and then could leave.

I want to make sure everyone knows there is a better alternative. If you decide that you absolutely must leave the park with ice all over.... The back gate to the park is open... The road is a gentle slope and is graveled for good traction.

To get there take the road just north of the clubhouse... The one off of Deer Lane that goes down by the lower storage area. It is the one by David Guiher's home.

Just in case you get stuck somewhere.. blankets and sleeping bags are good to carry all winter. Don't forget to carry snacks, water and maybe even your FRS Radio... Recently, I found a plastic whistle can be a real asset.

Since we have bus service now you can leave the traveling to the experts... They chain up when it is bad and go in and out of the park with ease.

Ron's Downfall

Saturday, I was at the Newport Main Fire Station... It was raining outside and after a training session for New CERT members was done. I gathered up my equipment and made for the back door where I had parked my vehicle.

It was very dark outside and as I stepped from the sidewalk to the parking lot pavement ... I didn't see the 2" drop from sidewalk to pavement. In slow motion I began a fall to the pavement. My equipment bag flew from my hands as I braced for the collision between me and the pavement. I was in between my van and a truck which I managed to miss... My left knee hit first I think and then my left elbow and forearm scrapped pavement and as gravity took it's final shot at me my head klonked the pavement.

It was dark and nobody was around... I yelled for help and although I could see people moving around in the building no one could hear me.....

Years ago our CERT team decided to wear whistles around our necks while we were on team business... There it was and after 4 years I needed it. I blew three short blast (the international distress signal).. and kept it up... People inside heard the shrill whistle and came out looking for the source.... I was saved!

When you are alone on a walk about in the park... Take your FRS radio and put that cheap plastic whistle around your neck... Someday, it may come in handy!

Update

The stalled car at the main gate managed to get away around 11:45am.

Windmill ICE

Stay off of Windmill... It is loaded with black ice. People are getting stuck at the gate. Tow trucks are not able to come up or down....

The Bus is chained up and is getting in and out of the park. That is an alternative... But the best choice is to stay home and warm... Prepare for a power loss... Gather blankets, flashlights, etc. Keep your radio on CH6.16 Your neighbors are only a call away.

Your mail will be there tomorrow ..let it be.

We have at least two reports of neighbors almost falling. Stay inside... Do not become part of the problem. If you need help get on the FRS Radio and tell us... We will figure something out.

The Linn's on Deer Lane.....at the north end of the park have their lights synchronized to Christmas Music that is broadcast over your FM radio....

After dark and before 10:00pm drive over to their home and tune your FM car radio to 98.3... The lights dance to the music! Kewell...

The music is on a loop of about 7 songs and then it repeats.. Stay for the whole show.

December 3, 2008--"Time traveling" astronomers have decoded echoes from a centuries-old supernova, allowing them to see light from the event as it appeared when the distant star first exploded.

In 1572 Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe mistook the supernova for a new star, and he studied it extensively until it disappeared from view. Modern telescopes allow us to see the remnant of the blast, which appears like a colorful piece of cosmic algae in the above composite image.

The new study, in last week's issue of the journal Nature, is the first confirmation that Brahe witnessed what's known as a normal Type Ia supernova—when a white dwarf star in a binary system gathers so much matter from its partner that it compresses until it explodes.

... Turning extremely cold with very low snow levels this weekend
over southwest Washington and northwest Oregon...

The coldest air of the winter season will be settling in over
southwest Washington and northwest Oregon this weekend... bringing
very cold temperatures to the region and snow levels possibly near
the valley floor.

The initial surge of cold air will spread into southwest
Washington and northwest Oregon Friday night as a strong cold
front moves through. While air ahead of this front will be
relatively mild... very cold air behind this front has the
potential to drop snow levels quite low... not unlike a snow event
that occurred in mid November of 2003 which dropped several inches
of snow in the Portland Metro area. While this kind of detail is
not certain at this point... the snow level at the back edge of the
cold front Friday night could turn out to be quite low.

The cold air will continue to stream onshore during the day
Saturday and any showers will likely drop snow to the 500 or 1000
feet elevations. The onshore flow will likely limit the
possibility of the snow reaching the valley floor due to a
significant over water trajectory of the air... as the water
temperatures off the coast remain in the lower 50s.

It appears a reinforcing shot of Arctic air will then spread
through The Gorge and down through western Washington into
northwest Oregon Saturday night and Sunday... and bring the coldest
air to the region in quite some time. At that point... minimum
temperatures could fall into the teens with daytime temperatures
struggling to reach freezing. The possibility of any significant
snow once the main shot of Arctic reaches our area is uncertain at
this time as it is dependent on whether any organized systems will
spread over the area... but the possibility does exist.

Be sure to take precautions this week in advance of the arrival of
the very cold air... such as wrapping pipes... covering foundation
vents... draining outdoor water pipes... and protecting vulnerable
outdoor plants.

Hello folks,

Let's talk about our monthly newsletter. The newsletter has run into some trouble that we feel you should know about.

Mr. Forsloff, a long time resident, has generously published the newsletter for the cost of ink and paper for a number of years. Sadly, that arrangement is coming to an end as he is retiring. We have been looking for other ways of keeping the newsletter alive and well.

Currently, we may be able to have a friend of Jim Rose's publish it for us. But, He lives in Portland. So that poses a logistics problem as you can see. Other options include having it printed locally. These options all will cost money which will be deducted from a rapidly depleting Social Club treasury.

We do have the ability to publish the entire newsletter on line for free. But that means people would have to view it on the computer.... Some folks don't have a computer. On the other hand we do have a computer lab at the clubhouse with high speed Internet for free.

This last newsletter will be the last until we have a solution to the problem...

To the, "Why don't you...... folks".... Hey, we need ideas but we need people and $$ willing to put forth a little effort. So, if the judgement of the community is to do nothing then it seems to me that the demise of the Newsletter is imminent.
