To our community,

We had our second emergency net tonight. We picked up a few and lost a few. Over time the results should improve. To those of you who have participated please try to remember this will be a weekly event to get everyone acclimated to using the radio and to checking their equipment. Sure we can put stuff here and on the newsletter but it will finally come down to you.. neighbor to neighbor passing the word along. Showing others that you are willing to participate and asking them to also.

When we have high winds and power outtages this winter we all will be connected on the net we are building now... If you are single this is a terrific deal for you.. Be connected to your neighbors and be able to get or give help because you are connected..

Next Sunday at 7:00pm sharp....join us on the net CH6.16 or CH6. If you don't know how... ask any CERT member to help you.

Newport News-Times: Newport hears more testimony about G-P pipeline: "The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality issues the permit allowing G-P to discharge its effluent into the ocean. Newport previously granted a franchise agreement to G-P to allow the pipelines to pass through the city, but this agreement lapsed, and for more than a year, city staff and G-P have been discussing a new agreement. The city council has been presented with a draft agreement, crafted by City Attorney Gary Firestone. As originally proposed, the agreement states that in exchange for the use of city rights of way, G-P would pay the city $10,000 per year (with annual increases), plus $500 per day for every day G-P exceeds DEQ permit standards. The agreement would be for 10 years, with automatic renewals in 10-year increments unless G-P breaches the agreement. G-P would have to maintain liability insurance covering any injury and/or property damage attributed to the pipeline and indemnify the city. Also, G-P would be required to comply with applicable city ordinances, coordinate any construction with the city, get city approval before abandoning lines, and move lines upon request by the city."

The beaches of Newport saw some interesting action last week, according to resident and naturalist Terry Morse. Besides the discovery of a seal carcass, the Nye Beach area was briefly covered in a densely packed layer of worm tubes, and some jellyfish made an onshore appearance as well."

State wildlife biologiosts blame human feeding of bears and a poor berry crop for the worst year in memory for bear damage in the Florence-Yachats area. Eight bears had to be killed along the central coast within a single week earlier this month, bringing the year’s total to 15. Six of the bears were public safety risks due to their aggressive behavior — one broke through a kitchen window looking for food and another charged growling and snarling into a backyard toward a homeowner. The other two bears killed tried to break into a pen where a goat had been killed the previous week. All bears killed were seen repeatedly in the daytime and were not wary of people."

Even the least of emergencies cause foul ups by loss of power, followed by loss of telephones and cell phones... It has happened here briefly and this year in Lincoln City for 3 days... on just a wind storm power failure...

With your little FRS radio you can be in touch with your neighbors without any power, telephones or cellphones... and in touch with the Longview Hills Emergency Response Team who monitor them 24/7.

Did you also know that several on the Emergency Response Team have become HAM (Amature Radio Operators) and are part of Lincoln County Emergency Services. Net Control???? What are they up to now?


If you bought an FRS radio because you wanted to be connected to your neighbors and CERT during a disaster, storm or other important events and you wanted the added feature of having a Neighborhood Watch Emergency Network and you have been waiting for improvements and help learning your radio. Now you will be able to practice once a week and get help... Watch and listen as we grow this network to include all that think it is a good idea.

Here is how it works.... Get your radio adjusted to CH 6.16 or CH 6 if you have trouble doing that or have a radio that won't adjust to CH 6.16. Make sure your batteries are ready to go for this Sunday.

Sunday evening and every Sunday evening we are going have the LVH emergency net. Precisely, at 7:00PM, You will hear our first Net Controller come on the air and announce to all that are listening that the net is beginning. He will tell you how it will go and what to say...

After Tom explains the Net you will here a check in process. There will be pauses as he records who has spoken to him and their signal strength. We have about 16 people who will help us this first time. You can participate at the end of the first roll call when Tom asks if there are any late or missed stations.. Just key your Mike and say the same things you have heard other people say... You need to know your first name and your lot or mailbox #... Tom will do the rest....

First times out of the box are always interesting and sometimes down right funny... Join us at NET and begin helping create the safest community ever.

New Stretcher Donated and Supplies

CERT is receiving donations of valuable medical supplies from individuals in our community.

Yesterday, Brian Hudson stopped by and gave the CERT team a collapsible metal stretcher/backboard and neck braces... Thanks Brian... The CERT team will be storing it in one of our earthquake storage bins located at strategic points in our community.

A few weeks ago, Bob Abbott donated a large quantity of emergency medical supplies... That will enable us to build 2 more team, emergency response, Medical Kits.. The most teams we can field now is 4 and that will bring our emergency kits to 4...

We salute our fellow community members in their concern to make the CERT team properly equipped to fulfill their mission and the CERT team hopes to never have to use any of it but we are becoming the best trained and best equipped team around... Thanks to your generosity and our determination.

Once again, won't you support us by coming to our meetings and lend a hand in learning what to do in an emergency? Meetings every Monday 10:00am to 12:00pm..except... the last Monday of the month at 6:00pm.

The company’s Japanese website doesn’t offer any official information so the news is yet to be confirmed.

The redesigned Prius will come equipped with solar panels on the roof, partly powering the air-conditioning system, which needs up to 5kw. According to the Nikkei, Toyota will procure the PV panels from Kyocera.

Toyota is the world’s first major automaker to install solar batteries on vehicles. It is not yet clear whether the solar Prius will be sold outside Japan as well."

After my latest poll on who wants to learn the computer and who would like to help others I am amazed that their are only two of you. However, to put a positive spin on those dreary stats I will say this... Two is cool! It does take the pressure off me to make lesson plans to teach larger classes. Those of you have taught school know of all the behind the scenes work that goes into teaching a successful class.

With all that prep work gone I will begin classes on Tuesdays at 9:00 AM sometime in late September. The class size will be no more than one or two at a time.... and will be conducted in the computer lab. The student(s) will simply tell me what they want to learn that day and that will be the subject... You will be shown, within the limits of my capabilities, only what interests you at the time... You come in and say, "I want to learn how to..." and that is what we will teach you or your group.

Classes will be in one hour increments... There will be a weekly sign up sheet where you sign up for the hour you want. If you are going away ... don't sign up and that will leave your slot open. If you want only one class... just sign up once...

School starts in September ... watch the bulletin board if you are interested.

Thinking down the road to this Fall and Winter.... We are thinking of organizing a small cadre of tech savy persons to visit you and your computer. They will set up Firefox on your computer, Make your computer display large print adjusted to your taste (throw those reading glasses away ). Big icons for older eyes. Have your desktop show large icons. Generally, make your computer more senior friendly... I will teach them how... You will make appointments for them to visit your computer... I will act as help for the new teachers... Help them with problems they encounter..

There is always someone who knows a bit more... or understands computers but we are looking for a few folks that would have fun doing this for people.. I will teach... you learn and commit to helping folks in our community when and if you can. Everyone moves forward... Time marches on and this teacher's corp learns how to help the blind, the hard of hearing , helps people set up their own customized newspaper, teaches how to use picture albums and make slide shows...as Martha would say, "It's a good thing".

There is already one on one classes for computers every Tuesday at the clubhouse computer lab. People come with very specific things they want to learn and we help them. They start at 9am and run to 1pm. They are currently closed but as those long winter nights close in on us... We will take more students.

A RIP ROARING ROAD TRIP >>or<< THE VALSETZ PICNIC ADVENTURE !!!

Yes, there really is a Ghost Town called Valsetz & it would make Indiana Jones proud to unlock it’s secrets !!! BUT I am getting, 138.7 miles, ahead of my self ….

This adventure started with an early morning fog & 12 folks excited about the prospects of being Indiana Jones for a day !!! We had 4 different maps + GPS data & enough enthusiasm to drive the 4 vehicles we took into “The Bush” !!! …. Did I mention, wonderful secret Lunches, Tow Straps, TP, Jacks & Cameras …….. Yes, we were ready for what ever the Logsden Valley & Siletz Canyon could dish out !!!

Just after our Wagon Master (Wayde Dudley) called our 1st “Convenience Stop” at Moonshine Park, we met a fellow, up in the canyon, who got his truck “cock-a-meme” off the road. Well not to worry, Frank Stout & Brian Hudson hooked their truck up to him & had him back on the road in 1 Big Pull !!! Then it was up >> up & away to our next stop at the Siletz Fish Trap …. Several of us walked down to see the Falls, Trap Equipment & another Convenience Stop. Then it was back on the road >><< KAPLUEE !!! >>> That’s when Al’s new Toyota Hybrid blew a front tire, It was not to Big of a Deal, since we were not going very fast, but it did require a tire change >> which << was accomplished by 6 men & 2 lovely ladies. (Actually, Brian & Frank did most of the “Heavy Lifting” with the rest of us giving very sound advice & commentary. Although Jerry Gibson & Bob Abbott did pretty dusty !!) The rest of the trip into Valsetz was relatively uneventful, except for Bob Abbott continuing to tell us >>> If we did not get him there “Soon” … He would Starve !!

Arrive we did >>&<< What we found was a lone cement slab, that we conjectured was a part of the long ago logging operation. We continued on a short distance & found a lovely spot to set up our “LVH FC Lunch Camp” … Boys Howdy >><< That sure made Bob Happy !!! The Weather just continued to get Sunny & Warm & we had a delightful “Luncheon Repast” ……..

I should mention that while we were enjoying our lunch. An Oregon State Trooper stopped to visit & Ginger Dale invited him to join us for a Fish Fry we were planning on having as soon as Larry could set up the stove & stuff !!! ( Actually, I just made that up because … where we were >><< It was “strictly illegal” to do any kind of Fishing. However, after he departed Ginger came up with this fun idea … maybe next time !!)

The Wagon Master then gave us the option of going back, several miles, to see & visit the “Valley of the Giants” or splitting the caravan with some of us continuing across the mountain to hook up with the Kings Valley Road,which links with HWY 20 back to Newport. We had a 50/50 Parting of the Ways ………. The Bottom Line is that we All had a Wonderful Day & Special Thanks are in order for our Wagon Master Wayde Dudley >>><<< It was readily moved & seconded, that we should begin considering What ,When & Where our Next Rip Roaring Road Trip should lead us ……

We started this blog (website) in 2002 as neighborhood news for Longviewhills Retirement Community located in Agate Beach, Oregon. Soon, we noticed it could act as a kind of community history and we began to put pictures in... which was a big hit.

Somewhere along the line we put in a counter to record the number of visitors to the site and began to accumulate statistics... I became obsessed with getting more and more readers... Looking back don't know why this became so important to me but it did.

Moving along, we found that the local and all Oregon newspapers were spotty at home delivery. I like to start my day with a cup of coffee and the newspaper... No newspaper today? Soon found that all the news could be found on line and the computer became my morning newspaper. It was a short hop from there to start linking the stories I found interesting to this blog and give others in the community access to a morning newspaper.

We publish those stories and a lot of what is going on in the community as well as creating websites for community clubs.. Over time some volunteers learned how to publish to all of these sites and they input to them on a regular basis... This all began to increase readership to the point that today I looked at the counter as it ticked over our 200,186th visitor...

We have tried many new things and continue to innovate. Never know when a new idea is likely to come up in conversation or pop into my noggin. We hope you have enjoyed the blog over the years and always welcome suggestions. If you play well with others and would like to play in our sandbox we are always looking for new writers and photographers. No commitment necessary.. Just come and play... If it becomes a burden then you just quit.... No hard feelings...
