					Eighteen months of negotiations are finally coming to a close. Our proposed legislation is now in Legislative Counsel. This is where any proposed legislation goes to be drafted and receives an LC number. When it leaves there it will go to the House and Senate, for a reading after which it has a bill number and is ready to be heard in committee. We will post the bill on our OSTA web site as soon as we have it in hand. That site is http://www.mhoo-osta.com. Give us until about the 2nd or 3rd week in February to get the information on the site. Briefly this is what the bill offers: A Payment of $5,000, $7,000 or $9,000 for a single wide, double wide or triple wide from the park owner; no charge to resident for disposing of the old home; A $10,000 state tax credit that is universally refundable for all tenants displaced by the closure, regardless of income or whether you are able to move your home or not; The landlord who elects to sell to the residents will be able to avoid Oregon state capital gains taxes. When the election returns came in I began hearing from people that we should be able to "get everything we want" since the Democrats won! Yes, they did win but with a one-person majority in the house. Some of those democrats are more conservative than others, as are some Republicans more liberal. So we submit our legislation and ask for their support. Is our Coalition bill everything we want? NO! Am I getting flack from people who think we didn't get enough. YES! But by the same token MHCO is getting flack from their members that they were too generous. That is what compromise is about. There are several other bills being presented. Some of them deal with legislation to enable us to become involved in coop's, such as that in New Hampshire, where it has been used so successfully in helping residents to become involved in buying their parks. There are bills to help fund those issues. As bills that deal with our issues come into focus we will add those to the web site. As you know I have worked with the Coalition for the past 5 sessions (10 years). To those of you who are new to OSTA, let me explain why the legislation concerning manufactured landlord tenant law comes out of the coalition. When I first became active in the legislative efforts of Manufactured Home Owners some 14 years ago I didn't have a clue how the legislative procedure worked. The first session was kind of a daze. We didn't even get a hearing. At the beginning of the second session Frank Burelson, who was a resident of Greenway in Dallas, and I made it a point to go to every hearing that the landlords had and protest that we were being ignored. Finally, Senator Bill Kennemer, a past senator from Clackamas, heard our pleas and turned to the landlord group and said to them," Don't you ever come before the legislature with legislation that affects these people, without their having been involved and you have an agreement, because if you do we will not hear your legislation." From that date forward we have worked with the coalition and have gained many benefits that has made our lives much better. We were reminded of that legislation last session when Senator Ben Westlund praised John Brenneman and I for working for legislation that both parties could agree to. A run down on some of those rights can be found in the article entitled "MEMBERSHIP IS CRUCIAL" in the current issue of the "OSTA Review". Finally, there is a small group, some of whom are OSTA members, who think they can come up with legislation that is better than ours. That is a possibility, but getting it passed is another story. I have been accused of "being in the pocket of the owners," regarding our coalition bills. Anyone who knows me knows nothing could be further from the truth. The coalition members have worked hard to learn to trust each other and in this day and age that is a good feeling and a rare relationship. Our Hospital Lectures Here Soon

Social Club President Wayde Dudley has arranged a presentation from Newport Samaritan Hospital.

Hospital Services from our local hospital will be here to explain how they serve the community and what services they offer on April 18th from 2 to 4pm.

This will be an informative meeting. Everyone is encouraged to attend.

For those that might be interested, the annual Blessing of the Fleet will be Saturday, March 17th. There is a Survival Suit Race at 9:30 a.m., which starts in front of Mo's on the Bayfront. At 1:00 p.m. there is The Blessing of the Fleet from the U.S. Coast Guard Station (the parade can be viewed along the Bayfront). At 3:30 p.m. is a Fishermen's Memorial Service at the Fishermen's Memorial Sanctuary at Yaquina State Park. From 6:00 - 10:00 p.m. is a "Battle of the Frypan" to see who wins the Best of the Bay, at the Newport Middle School, as well as entertainment, art silent auction, displays, etc. There is a charge for the evening event. This year the Honorary Commanders of the Parade are Mike and Kathy Holmgren. Mike is the coach of the Seattle Seahawks. AND IT CAME TO PAST.........

in ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot. And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called Amazon Dot Com.

And she said unto Abraham, her husband: "Why dost thou travel far, from town to town with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said: "How, dear?"

And Dot replied: I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale, and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete (look it up, it means to hide) himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading.

And the young men did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short. And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates" drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say: "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others."

And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or eBay as it came to be known, he said: "We need a name that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied: "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators." "YAHOO," said Abraham.

And that is how it all began.

Google simplification


Google bought our blogging company sometime ago and has been adding and modifying the way this webpage is made. Over time they have made innovations to remove the necessity for knowing html code to make a page work. I learned the code to create what we have now. As time and age move on though we may not be able to keep up this website and others that fall under our umbrella.

So, while we are able we will be incorporating Google's new designs into this site. I suspect there will be days that we wish it was never attempted. Google says when we finish though people will be able to design and make what has to be done now with code without a bit of knowledge of code. That means one day a new editor will step up to the plate and carry Longview Hills @ Newport Oregon into the future. It is already a living history of a retirement community around the 21st century.

The ARCHIVES

We have had comments that the archives for the website stopped working. Worked on it today and found a new way to make them work and it should be a lot easier for you. When you scroll down the page on the left you will find a new box to the archives that conveniently lists them by date. The website is archived weekly right back to its beginning. Everything is there, a miniature history of LVH for about 5 years. Over 5000 posts!

Should you care to research the archives or the current articles there is a search engine just for this website alone in the top left corner of the page just above the banner picture. Put in your search key words or names and up will pop links to all that was said on the subject in the past. Try putting in your name or a friend's that is active in park activities.

A word about the looks of what you will see... When an archive is called it brings up all the stories written on the date range selected but the rest of the website does not change. All that changes are the articles. Look for the dates on the postings and you will know you are in the right place.

WHAT IS GPS ?

Wayde Dudley is planning a discussion of GPS. Everyone knows a little about GPS but not many know a lot. GPS is a reasonably simple method of calculating a position on the surface of the earth. Using that position together with accurate maps allows people to navigate their way to desired places.

The theory of GPS will be explained, what equipment is involved, accuracy of positioning, limitations, uses and truths and untruths.

Plan to attend this presentation and ask your questions about GPS. The time and place will be announced after we determine the level of interest.

Alerting the community

We have been tossing around ideas to come up with a signal that would alert the entire community to go to CH 5 FRS radio and find out what's happening that an alert has been called without having to spend hours dialing everyone in the park. Buying a radio and using CH5 FRS to broadcast alerts and information on CH5 are two components. The third, alerting the community that there is an event that needs their attention is a bit more elusive.

Two of the components, monitoring and getting the entire community to buy and learn how to use their radios are making great progress. New folks are coming on board regularly. The third component is elusive but we have some good leads to track down. The idea of megaphones being used to call an alert is not workable due to the heavy insulation our homes all have they are just not audible when the windows are closed like in winter. We thought that a series of automobile horns oscillating on emergency horn honk would be the answer but again these well insulated homes tend to cancel that idea out also.

BUT, today at the CERT meeting a couple of team members spoke about other parks similar to our own that had a special system installed where the neighborhood watch member or like person pushed a button on their phone and it rang every phone in the park with a special tone. If such a system is available to us we could say if that special tone sounds everyone go to CH 5 on their radios for an announcement and update on the problem. Such a system would tie the whole park together almost instantly and put everyone on CH 5 throughout the event with continuous updates. A staggeringly wonderful idea. We will research it and keep you informed from the KnowZone this is RT signing off.

There were a couple of articles in Monday's Salt Lake City Tribune that
might not have made it to Newport yet and I thought you'd like to be kept up
to date.

"People Different From Us". The New Jersey Department of Health and
Senior Services issued a warning in January to residents of the city of
Ringwood that they should limit their intake of squirrel to no more than
twice a week (children once a month). (A toxic waste dump is nearby).
Dan Gulley Jr., 70, and David Brooks Jr., 62, fought in January in
Atmore, Ala., and acccording to police, Gulley pulled out a gun and shot
Brooks. The two were arguing over how tall the late singer James Brown was.

"When Bad Things Happen to Stupid and Unlucky People". Glenn Vickers,
58, allegedly intoxicated, wildly tailgated a driver in January on
Interstate 64 that happened to be Kanawha County, W. Va., Sheriff Mike
Rutherford in an unmarked car. After jockeying behind Rutherford for a
while, Vickers peeled off at an exit and flipped Rutherford the finger, but
immediately crashed into a guardrail.

The March/April issue of AARP magazines delights us by telling us that
"They'll be back-- four million kids ages 25 through 34 will move back home
this year".

I think I am finally starting to understand why the Muslims in Iraq are
killing each other, and it took Garry Trudeau's "Doonesbury" cartoon in last
Sunday's paper to clue me in. In the strip an American GI and an Iraqi
interpreter are cruising the streets of Bagdad in a Humvee looking for a bad
guy. The GI tells the interpreter that their orders are to capture the bad
guy and do him no harm. The interpreter says that as soon as he sees the
suspect he is going to kill him instead. The GI is puzzled and asks why?
The Iraqi explained that a member of the suspect's family had killed a
member of his family and he was sworn to avenge the act. The American
asked: "Gosh, when did this happen?". The Iraqi said: "In the year 1358".
(This is a great time for an Editorial Comment, but I will refrain and let
you make your own comment here).

The next time you see Ben Davi, pull up a chair and ask him to tell you the
joke about the talking dog. I advise that you hold onto the chair to keep
from falling out when he delivers the punch line.

Scanners

Uh-huh... Like a cat in a sand box I'm covering more bases with our CH 5 monitoring.... IDEA! There are folks in the park with scanners that listen 24/7 to fire calls, PUD, ambulance, and police. It's kind of a hobby for some and others like to stay on top of what's happening. Sitting here and thinking about it, I know of 5 people park wide that do this. There are probably more.

I will find out what the frequency of CH5 FRS is and post it here and email those with scanners with it asking them to put it on their scanners. That will get us even more folks monitoring Ch5 all the time.. It may just fulfill our goal of around the clock monitoring and put more ears on our KnowZone network.

If you are a scanner person please tell your Neighborhood Watch Coordinator... They are like a clearing house for all information park wise. They talk to one another and keep each other informed. The park is divided into 3 areas with a coordinator in each area. The coordinators pretty much monitor CH 5 all the time. You can tell or ask them about park going ons any time between 8:00 AM and 6:00pm.. After that time make calls only to inform of something going on or to find out about an outage. Call 911 if something bad is happening.

If you live on Windmill and south of Windmill your coordinator is Bill Furgason.. If you live north of Windmill but south of the lake your coordinator is Rod (Coach) McCready. If you live north of the lake your coordinator is Marlene Crites. If you live in between any of those lines you can talk to your choice of coordinator.

The Know Zone

The plan for the communications part of the Know Zone is evolving and some very good foundation blocks are in place. The first major hurdle was to find a rapid way of communicating with you folks. We have it and it is in place and working pretty good.

We have been working on it for a couple of months now and here is a report. There are 3 Neighborhood Watch Block Captain Coordinators. At this time they all happen to be members of the CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) They have been trained by local police, fire, Red Cross, Coast Guard, State Police and Pacific West Ambulance.. Some have been certified in Red Cross First Aid, CPR, and AED (Automatic Electric Defibrillator) . They also have trained most diligently on a weekly basis to enhance LVH's safety.

What has been done with communications.... Thanks to some great benefactors the park has 5 radios with rechargeable batteries. They have 3 chargers. Each one of the Coordinators has a radio tuned to CH5 FRS all the time and they listen most of the time, 24/7. As time goes on more of the CERT team will be asked to carry rechargeable radios much of the time and monitor CH 5 if they wish to volunteer. When we can say we have coverage 24/7 all the time we will have reached a milestone.

Your part at this point is to buy a radio.. preferably with a charger, and learn to use it... CERT team members will help you learn just ask them. Practice any time from 9:00 AM to 6:00PM. Call for a radio check or to ask if there are any Neighborhood problems or to report a problem.. HOWEVER, we are not the police or ambulance service you should make those calls yourself but you could give us a heads up on CH 5 FRS. Do Radio Checks and ask questions on the air until you can work your radio with your eyes shut. A problem may happen during the night with no electricity... Buy your radio and practice now.

Looking outside the box

Recently, I ran into a new friend down at Staples here in town. He is recently retired Police sergeant Dean Sawyer. Retirement being not being what he thought it was he looked for a part time job and found it with the tribal council in Siletz. He is their emergency coordinator now. We talked about the FRS radios that go on sale periodically for around $15 a pair and then he went on to tell me something that got my brain whirling...

In the office building at Siletz everyone has an FRS radio at their desk. In case of emergency they pick it up and turn it on. Instantly, everyone is connected and good to go. That is what we want here with our Neighborhood Watch FRS Security system. But, (there is always a but isn't there?) there is something missing.. it's right there in front of us... a basic component that would tie the whole thing together for us!

Here is what is needed... We need a signal of some kind that would alert everyone to pick up their radios and turn them on to CH 5.. Everyone interested in being notified would be in instant communications.

Here is what we have. 3 Block Captain Coordinators with radios tuned to CH5 and on 24/7 but not necessarily listened to 24/7.. That would be asking a lot of any volunteer. However, it is a good system that can be improved. They monitor CH 5 like many hobbyists in the park listen to a scanner to hear what public service agencies are doing.

Now we need a system that channels phone calls to these 3 coordinators about park events and emergencies. They then need an alarm of some sort to sound if they deem it necessary to make a park wide broadcast on CH 5.

I know there would have to be stringent rules about what constitutes an emergency that requires an alarm to be set off lest we begin to cry wolf to often.

For the most part things affecting the park that are non- emergencies like the shutting off of water or loss of power (even though they have the potential of becoming an emergency) could be relayed by a neighbor tuning to CH 5 and asking one of our coordinators if anything is going on. The coordinators will be informed about this type of information by Larry Henson.

However, if a coordinator, following park guidelines, (that don't exist as of yet) deemed a situation an emergency then he/she would activate the neighborhood emergency alert system and everyone would know that they should tune to CH 5 FRS to be informed and to get help.

The Alarm? Here is the way it could work for no cost to LVH or it's residents. Selected volunteers through out the park would agree to click the emergency horn icon on their car's key chain and let their car horn oscillate for 5 minutes. Neighbors hearing that would be asked to turn on their horns for 5 minutes. Horns can be activated from inside the home by just a press of the button. At the end of 5 minutes horns are turned off and folks are tuned to CH 5 to listen for instructions.

This system would need practice drills to get people used to what to do.

I would like to give the system a try but we need folks to buy into the idea... That means that there will not be 100% agreement. There are people on one end of the spectrum who think readiness, Neighborhood watch and CERT are a bunch of hooey. There are those on the other that think they should be involved in preparation for any event. Of course the majority live in the middle.

Well what we are going to do is have a listing right here on this site of neat things to watch with the rater's view as 3 to 5 star rating. We are going to post times and dates (we have Tivo and one of its features is it allows you to look into the future and see dates and times that a program will appear again.) of shows that are excellent which means you won't have to watch reruns or flip through channels endlessly.

The way it will work is we will have a special email address and you can mail your recommendation to that address. You give a rating, ***really good, **** Really rocked my boat and *****Knocked my socks completely off. Your name goes on the recommendation. If you can enclose dates and times of the next airing if not we will look it up but we would appreciate it if you did this small task as we have many irons in the fire.

Be careful how you rate things because your friends will begin to wonder about your ratings.. Ohhh so and so rates this 5 stars must be good or it's a real stinker.

We will have some fun with this for awhile and see how it goes...

Recently, we asked Newport Police Chief Mark Miranda when to call 911 and when to call the business number... He emailed this response:

When to Call 9-1-1

Call 9-1-1 when it is an emergency and a prompt response is needed. Call 9-1-1 if it is a life-threatening situation or something is occurring at the time of the call. Fire, medical problems, assault, fight, traffic accident or any situation that could result in loss of life or major property loss should be called in to 9-1-1.

When to call the non-emergency number

The non-emergency number in the Newport area is 265-4231, which you can dial 24 hours a day for non-emergency help. Using the non-emergency number keeps 9-1-1 call takers available for true emergencies. 9-1-1 call takers receive non-emergency and emergency calls often, most frequently the call is from someone wanting to report a crime which occurred a few hours, or even days ago.

Some examples of events when you should call 265-4231 are:

Life or property is not in immediate danger.

Your runaway child has returned home.

You need to add additional information to a report already worked by Law Enforcement.

If you think that something does not look right or is suspicious , it probably is. It is best for the police to check the situation out. Call 265-4231.

WHY DO YOU KEEP CHANGING YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS?

One thing you can do to uncomplicate your life and make email a really great experience is to stop changing your email address. Maybe you think that when you get a new email provider you have to use their free email service.. (Free until you change providers or move) Maybe you have Outlook Express and think that is the best because you learned to use it when you first got your computer. It works kind of ok but it stores your old mail on your computer... What happens when you get a new computer? Or when your computer stores too many things? Something has to go... Start deleting email.. Completely unnecessary.

These are non problems if you change the way you look at email. Email evolved years ago and has done nothing but get better. If you are stuck in the above loop you are losing out in so many ways and it does not have to be that way. You know how much you like updating your email address book when a friend or relative changes their email address? Well, it's time to stop doing that and you can tell them too.

What you need to do is get a free email service that lives on-line, has unlimited storage, categorizes and files every email you get. One that has your own private search engine that has looked at every word written to or by you .... Enter a key word and up pops all messages sent or received by you about the keyword for the rest of your life. No need to ever delete any email sent or received.. keeps them all on a computer that lives online not your computer at home. Travel somewhere? Not a problem .. everything is right there from any computer any place. Move? Change Internet provider? Not a problem your email is permanent and not dependent on a provider. Choose one address, one time and it is yours until you pass on.

Type the first letter of anyone in your address book on the email form and up pops all your contacts in alphabetical order of the one letter you type..click the one you want and you are ready to write.

Spam checker that stops them cold.. Add a label to special emails. Put a star on something really important. Send a friend an email ... they answer ... then you answer..etc. and it strings them together automatically so you can see what your entire conversation has been. Hi-lite sentences EZ link sending..

There is more and it will change the way you use email.. and it's free.

Gmail is its name. I'm not sure if you can signup for it now because it has been in "beta" (beta means test) for sometime. You had to know someone who had it that would send you an invitation. If you can't sign up for it just send me an email. I have quite a few invitations I'm willing share with residents. Give it a try. It's free.

One problem, and we are looking at solutions now.... It is not possible to dim fluorescents with a regular dimmer switch found in most homes today. I'll report on this later. Also, you use less power because fluorescents put out way more light per watt than incandescent lights. For instance a 15 watt fluorescent light put out about what a 60 watt incandescent would. They do not put out a harsh white light like they used to.. after about 10 seconds of warm up they put out the same orangish white that you are used to.

More residents are buying FRS radios to tie into the Know Zone with. It's a trickle to be sure but as you become used to the idea you will see the big picture for the use of the system we think. The tipping point will be the day we have all the block Captains tied in... We continue to work for that day.

Here are somethings you should KNOW that happened recently....

• Friday Frank Mazzeo went to the hospital because of a suspected Heart Attack and was transported the next day to Corvallis..
  

• Saturday, around midnight, in the vicinity of 62nd st 6 shots were heard to be fired either from the south or west.. the resident reporting wasn't sure. The resident told neighborhood watch the next day. The block Captain advised the neighbor to call 911 immeadiately if that happened again. I would like you to know that I have regular dealings with Mark Miranda our Police Chief and he has told me over and over that an immeadiate 911 call gives them a chance to catch the crook and they want you to do it and will not treat you as if you are crying, "WOLF!".

• On another occasion it was reported that one of the new and vacant homes had an open door with no one around. A discussion at CERT Training unanimously agreed that it could be someone forgot to lock up or it could have been a robbery in progress. It was recommended that 911 be called and asked to investigate. You put yourself in jeopardy if it turned out to be an armed robber or crack head. We opt for the man with the badge and gun.

The bill was prompted by the uproar that greeted a Virginia shipbreaking company last year when it tried to find a site in Oregon to open the only West Coast facility to dismantle obsolete ships from the 'Ghost Fleet' of deteriorating government vessels -- a problem that has been slowing the disposal of ships in California's Suisun Bay."

Know Zone update

Last night we put into practice a 24 hour monitoring of Ch5... Only one person is monitoring through the night at this time. Several are monitoring during daylight hours. With this growing net there will come a time when nothing goes unnoticed in the park. We need folks to volunteer to monitor from 11:00pm to 8:00am. We are especially asking block captains of Neighborhood Watch to step up and volunteer for 1 night shift a month. We will train you (CERT) and we will not just throw you in to the job... until you say you are ready.

For the rest who don't want to volunteer you can help by just buying an FRS radio at WalMart or Staples and asking a CERT person to help you set it up if you need help. Recommended is that you buy one with a battery charger so that if you choose, you can leave it on all the time in the charger cradle.

CERT team members will wear their Ball Caps while they are in the park (If they remember) and you can stop them and ask for radio help or about CERT anytime.

You can hone your skills with the radio by calling for a radio check and someone will answer and tell you how you are doing. They can help you with any questions about your radio then too.

If you have news affecting the community you can use ch 5 to inform the duty person who will tell the community periodically through the day what is happening.

If something happens to you you can execute a query on CH5 and ask if anyone knows what is going on. The duty person will usually have the scoop. If not he/she will call a block captain coordinator who will try to find out and broadcast the answer to you and everyone else.

For instance most of the community had water recently but those on 60th st did not for a couple of days. Most folks would not even know about it but if you were on 60th st you could have called the KnowZone on CH 5 and got or made a report. It all comes to the point that if you want to know something.. monitor or call the KnowZone CH5. It will be your quickest source to what's happening.

Support the Know Zone by buying a radio and learning how to use it. And, by volunteering once a month to help be a monitor.

EVERGREEN LOOKING SOUTH on Tuesday.. 4 semi's and two pickups hauling equipment up to Cell phone towers at the top of the park.

The one trailer was loaded with an 80,000lb Electronic equipment building with 2 huge air conditioner units on it.

You might wonder what an 80,000 lb load would do to the pipes under the street. So do I. Even though these are private streets the tower owner evidently has a right of way to the forest road through the park. Larry Henson said they usually give some sort of warning before they come so he can be ready for them. This time they just opened the gate themselves and came in. The crane made its lifts after positioning 4 outriggers on the road. They made small indentations in the pavement.

When Bill Furgason and I went to the forest during the holidays many gravel trucks were paving the forest road with small egg sized gravel in preparation for this event.

During the event we broadcast a discription of what was going on over FRS CH5 on your park Know Zone radio. You would have been in the know if you had tuned in. Whenever something is going on the park from now on get the word out to your block captain. They will tell their respective coordinator and they will have it broadcast on CH5 by the duty KnowZone operator. Have something important report it to a block Captain or Key your radio Mike and ask or tell the Know Zone operator what's going on.

The know zone is going to operate 24/7 .. We need help... Want to help broadcast? Volunteer the CERT Team will teach you everything you need to know and be there until you can do it on your own.If 30 people volunteer that's 1 day a month per person. This is ideal for folks that may want to volunteer but can't because of health reasons.. You can do everything from your own home.

Stumps Found on North Oregon Coast Believed to Be 80,000 Years Old: "(Oregon Coast) – Abnormally low sand levels along Oregon beaches are causing all sorts of interesting things to pop up, usually in the form of ancient forests usually well buried during most decades – forests that tell some intriguing, even terrifying stories.

If truth is really stranger than fiction, then the oddities cropping up all over the Oregon coast make Stephen King and Arthur C. Clarke look like kids weaving silly tales in their tree forts. Extremely old tree stumps – anywhere from 300 years old to 2,000 years old – are being unearthed by unbelievably low sand levels this winter, caused by big storm action. But one group of stumps showing up are shockingly old – to the tune of 80,000 years old."

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near Tampa, Florida, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.One nurse took her copy to Missouri . The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this "anonymous" poem winging across the Internet.

Crabby Old Man

What do you see nurses? .......What do you see?
What are you thinking......when you're looking at me?
A crabby old man, .....not very wise,
Uncertain of habit ........with faraway eyes?

Who dribbles his food.......and makes no reply.
When you say in a loud voice....."I do wish you'd try!"
Who seems not to notice .....the things that you do.
And forever is losing ............... A sock or shoe?

I'll tell you who I am ....... As I sit here so still,
As I do at your bidding, ........as I eat at your will.
I'm a small child of Ten......with a father and mother,
Brothers and sisters ......who love one another

A young boy of Sixteen ...........with wings on his feet

Tis jest to make old age .......look like a fool.The body,
it crumbles..........grace and vigor, depart.
There is now a stone........where I once had a heart.

But inside this old carcass ...... A young guy still dwells,
And now and again .........my battered heart swells.
I remember the joys.............. I remember the pain.
And I'm loving and living.............life over again.

I think of the years .....all too few......gone too fast.
And accept the stark fact........that nothing can last.
So open your eyes, people ..........open and see..Not a crabby old man.
Look closer....see........ME!!
