Coming soon just down from Longview Hills and right off Highway 101 will be a new Beauty Salon and Spa.......there will also be a Chiropracter, a Dr. Kelly who will be using part of the building. I understand they are trying to get a Acupuncture in there also. Found out that they are to open the first part of June of this year.

Know Zone update

Last night we put into practice a 24 hour monitoring of Ch5... Only one person is monitoring through the night at this time. Several are monitoring during daylight hours. With this growing net there will come a time when nothing goes unnoticed in the park. We need folks to volunteer to monitor from 11:00pm to 8:00am. We are especially asking block captains of Neighborhood Watch to step up and volunteer for 1 night shift a month. We will train you (CERT) and we will not just throw you in to the job... until you say you are ready.

For the rest who don't want to volunteer you can help by just buying an FRS radio at WalMart or Staples and asking a CERT person to help you set it up if you need help. Recommended is that you buy one with a battery charger so that if you choose, you can leave it on all the time in the charger cradle.

CERT team members will wear their Ball Caps while they are in the park (If they remember) and you can stop them and ask for radio help or about CERT anytime.

You can hone your skills with the radio by calling for a radio check and someone will answer and tell you how you are doing. They can help you with any questions about your radio then too.

If you have news affecting the community you can use ch 5 to inform the duty person who will tell the community periodically through the day what is happening.

If something happens to you you can execute a query on CH5 and ask if anyone knows what is going on. The duty person will usually have the scoop. If not he/she will call a block captain coordinator who will try to find out and broadcast the answer to you and everyone else.

For instance most of the community had water recently but those on 60th st did not for a couple of days. Most folks would not even know about it but if you were on 60th st you could have called the KnowZone on CH 5 and got or made a report. It all comes to the point that if you want to know something.. monitor or call the KnowZone CH5. It will be your quickest source to what's happening.

Support the Know Zone by buying a radio and learning how to use it. And, by volunteering once a month to help be a monitor.

EVERGREEN LOOKING SOUTH on Tuesday.. 4 semi's and two pickups hauling equipment up to Cell phone towers at the top of the park.

The one trailer was loaded with an 80,000lb Electronic equipment building with 2 huge air conditioner units on it.

You might wonder what an 80,000 lb load would do to the pipes under the street. So do I. Even though these are private streets the tower owner evidently has a right of way to the forest road through the park. Larry Henson said they usually give some sort of warning before they come so he can be ready for them. This time they just opened the gate themselves and came in. The crane made its lifts after positioning 4 outriggers on the road. They made small indentations in the pavement.

When Bill Furgason and I went to the forest during the holidays many gravel trucks were paving the forest road with small egg sized gravel in preparation for this event.

During the event we broadcast a discription of what was going on over FRS CH5 on your park Know Zone radio. You would have been in the know if you had tuned in. Whenever something is going on the park from now on get the word out to your block captain. They will tell their respective coordinator and they will have it broadcast on CH5 by the duty KnowZone operator. Have something important report it to a block Captain or Key your radio Mike and ask or tell the Know Zone operator what's going on.

The know zone is going to operate 24/7 .. We need help... Want to help broadcast? Volunteer the CERT Team will teach you everything you need to know and be there until you can do it on your own.If 30 people volunteer that's 1 day a month per person. This is ideal for folks that may want to volunteer but can't because of health reasons.. You can do everything from your own home.

If truth is really stranger than fiction, then the oddities cropping up all over the Oregon coast make Stephen King and Arthur C. Clarke look like kids weaving silly tales in their tree forts. Extremely old tree stumps – anywhere from 300 years old to 2,000 years old – are being unearthed by unbelievably low sand levels this winter, caused by big storm action. But one group of stumps showing up are shockingly old – to the tune of 80,000 years old."

When an old man died in the geriatric ward of a small hospital near Tampa, Florida, it was believed that he had nothing left of any value. Later, when the nurses were going through his meager possessions, they found this poem. Its quality and content so impressed the staff that copies were made and distributed to every nurse in the hospital.One nurse took her copy to Missouri . The old man's sole bequest to posterity has since appeared in the Christmas edition of the News Magazine of the St. Louis Association for Mental Health. A slide presentation has also been made based on his simple, but eloquent, poem.And this little old man, with nothing left to give to the world, is now the author of this "anonymous" poem winging across the Internet.

THE KNOW ZONE

'We don't know what to do. We have no cell phones, wallets, IDs.'"

At a Social Club Meeting Maryln Breakfield speaks of the huge 8.9 earthquake in Alaska when they lived there. Everything was so confused Bob and her did not know what to do. They were warned a tsunami was coming but they did not know what to do. So, they went home and waited.

A t LVH we have had the Neighborhood Watch Block Captain System for years. It evolved over time to where there were over 35 Block Captains through out the park. Each operating independently. This one did a good job.. that one didn't do anything, That one was disorganized, this one did things this way while others did it that way. Some did nothing.

Evolving Neighborhood Watch gained a coordinator who would receive and transmit messages to all the Block Captains and try to standardize all the forms... Some change in efficiency but not really that much. Why? The poor coordinator needed to get on the phone to relay a message to 35 other people. By the time that was done it would be time to call again to tell everyone the event was over. This process would be over 6 hours long.. If someone was not home they didn't get notified and neither did their people. Here is a management factoid... Anytime the group you manage is over 7 people or groups everything will deteriorate. 5 groups or 5 people works. 35 block captains ridicoulous! Not gonna work and takes to long. Wears out the coordinator besides as in the story above ...The couple's phones would not work. This is a recipe for disaster. An unnecessary disaster that we can all avoid by entering the KNOW ZONE.

Things will be changing rapidly very soon.. In fact they have all ready started... As of tonight Irene Repetski is entering the know zone.... You are part of the solution!

The Know Zone

Mike Larsen, a friend and fellow CERT team member said, “You know you ought to write about some of the stuff that has been going on around here and how everyone needs to enter the Know Zone.”

Did you know that the CERT team is working out plans called, “Standard Operating Procedures” (SOP’s)? What’s that? Well, they are guidelines for a team to follow during an emergency. Because we are developing these SOP’s as a team, we all have a say in what and how those plans work. At the end an SOP has been designed and discussed to the most miniscule detail by everyone on the team. All possibilities that we can think of beforehand are included in the plan. So when the day arrives we will have both practiced and planned for a lot of the possibilities as a team. Those that we can’t know will be dealt with as they come up. But for the most part we will have a handle on a lot of what happens.

Did you know that the current largest problem we face is getting our community in touch with one another especially in the first few hours. Pulling everyone under one umbrella and making sure you know we are coming and what you can do. You need to be in the Know Zone.

Did you know that 2 persons came out of the forest late at night recently and the police were called? Did you know they were arrested for meth? Did you know that a lady has been seen at the main gate, late at night, staring across the park by residents? Are you in the know about a resident that makes a patrol loop around the park once a night in the wee hours of the morning? He actually confronted some teenagers loitering and scared them off and turned it in to the police. Did you know that one of our single lady residents awoke to a strange man standing next to her bed recently? He was arrested. Did you know what was going on during the last high powered wind storm. Were you able to follow what repair crews encountered? Those in the know zone know all about these things. Did you know that right now the water is shut off on 60^th st here in our community? Won’t be on for a day or so. about the lady who was protected from loss of oxygen in the last windstorm? Did you know that recently a modus operandi for local theives is to run a stick across your outside wall and if no lights come on they feel emboldened to break in? Did you know that several residents possess the key to the know zone and are in the know? Because of the know zone several people feel more secure and sleep easier...

NOW! The Know Zone is going to increase in size and scope .. Everyone will be offered the key. You will be able to know what is going on 24/7 in our community... and you are part of the plan.

Last night a water leak occurred in the vicinity of 608 NE 60th St. Early this morning I made the decision to turn the water off to the loop line serving that area.
Now contacting residents in the area to inform them that Dave or I will bring them water if they need it and there are showers at the Longview Hills Community Center spa room. Apologize for the inconvenience. Hope to get this fixed as soon as possible.

OBSERVATIONS....

 

I will attempt to complete this article with Marilynn's help.  I don't know what "truncated" means, but that is what happened to my earlier attempt.

 

I got good news that the IMRT radiation treatments I had last summer (25 sessions) along with a long day of HDR (High Density Radiation) appears to have done the job in my case.  Hopefully my name will be added officially to the Prostate Cancer Survivor's list when I visit my medical team in Eugene on March 1.

 

I bring this up for two reasons:  First, to express my complete trust in modern medicine and the dedicated people who are working to make our lives better.  There is an enormous amount of information available on the internet for almost any malady and my advice is to be pro-active with your health by doing your homework.  Not ignoring "danger" signals from one's body is a wise choice to make along with keeping your medical team up to date on all of your concerns.   Second, I bring this up to say (as a life-long Republican, but you already knew that):  "God Bless The Democrats".  It was the Democrats, by a substantial majority who voted MediCare into being.  Without MediCare I might be in a pickle.  The tab for my treatment as best as I can determine approached $75,000 of which I paid nada, zip, zilch, zero.....in other words my MediCare supplement (Mutual of Omaha) along with MediCare took care of the entire bill.  Let's hear it for President Johnson!

 

Now I can get back to worrying about a comet falling on me; President Hillary; how does the government know each year which flu shot to prepare for me; is someone going to invent a cure for arthritis of the knees; why is there only one place in Brigham City, Utah where a person can get a drink of Pendleton whiskey; is Windows Vista going to be too complicated for me to understand; and can the Bears win the Super Bowl this year?

 

I will also begin enjoying the cool weather here in Utah (2 degrees last night), now that the furnace man said my furnace is good to go for at least another five years.  It has snowed a total of eight inches so far, but it is almost gone now.  A neighbor bought a Massey Furgason tractor and a box scraper last summer.  He is the unofficial snow plow for our block.  I heard him out there after our last snow fall and visited with him.  He is an engineer with Thiakall (the people that make booster engine parts, etc. for the space program) and is so senior at his job he has nothing to do.  With all of that time on his hands he needed something to occupy his time so he bought an old tractor and fixed it up to function as a snow plow.  He said that when there is a prediction of snow he gets so excited that he can't sleep in eager anticipation of his plowing duties.

 

Twenty people signed up after seeing my two inch ad in the local paper regarding stained glass classes.  I went from having enough time in my life to spend an hour daily with Assistant Manager Dave solving the world's problems while in Newport to not knowing how I was going to make it through the six week class sessions.  Student Betty who is 82, and Student Dorothy who is 86 are keeping me focused.  When they tell me they are NOT comfortable doing things my way, all I can say is "yes maam" and try to find a way to get my point across they will accept.  Imagine that, SOME people get set in their ways as they get older.......who would have thought?

6 tablespoons brown sugar

Preheat oven to 350?. Although you will not use the oven for this recipe, it will warm up the cold kitchen in the morning. (Remember to leave oven door open.) Also, I always wanted to start a recipe with 'preheat oven.'

Divide the oatmeal between two small, pyrex bowls. Push the berries on top of the oatmeal. Pour enough yogurt on top to insulate the heat of the oatmeal.

Spoon sugar over top of bowls evenly, fully covering. Burn with a créme brûlée torch until solid.

We got here a little after 4:00PM No trouble in the drive. Tomorrow I get started securing the place.

For the CERT team and the community.... We stopped at Harbor Freight in Arcada. I bought one megaphone. Had planned to buy 5 but they upped the price to $15 apiece. They were $7. The clerk says they go on sale every 3 months so we will wait. This also gives us a chance to try out one to see if it is all we want it to be. The clerk says if it does go on sale from 90 days of purchase they will refund the difference. When I get home will turn the receipt over to the Social Club.

Let me talk to you folks our friends and neighbors. I am heartened by your response to the controversy article. I think enough has been said and plan to let it drop now.

If you really want to help the CERT team you could talk to your Neighborhood Watch Block Capitan and convince them to buy an FRS radio with a battery Charger. Why? CERT and the Neighborhood Watch Block Captains working together will increase the CERT team's ability to help the community in a rapid manner. In point of fact Neighborhood Watch will be asked to perform an assessment of the damage and injured within their group and relay that information via FRS radio CH5 To CERT Operations. With them doing that we can cut 4 hours off what the CERT team would have to do before they could begin rescue operations and First Aide. 4 hours .. 4 HOURS! Think of the possible lives that can be saved... Think of the rescues that can be done almost immediately. The Neighborhood Watch Block Captains have a huge and important roll to play in our community Disaster plans. Yet they are unusable without communications. Our hope is between the CERT team and you, our neighbors, we can get our Block Captains motivated to buy a radio.

How will it work? After the disaster CERT will be setting up for a time in order to prepare for operations. During the same time our CERT Communications team (Liz Hill and Kristy Graff) will set up neighborhood, CERT and Lincoln County Emergency Services communications links.
The team will survey their neighborhoods on the way to the operations center (the clubhouse if it is still standing). The teams will organize and begin operations taking any volunteers willing to work under their supervision. About this time radio links should begin being established and an Incident Commander from CERT will assume the lead roll. People from the community will listen on their radios on CH 5 if they need help they will ask and Kristy or Liz who will notify the CERT team. Soon the Neighborhood Watch block Captains will call in with their knowledge of who is at home and who is injured, and how badly. The Incident Commander will establish priorities and dispatch the teams and volunteers at his/her disposal.

We are presently working on guidelines for incident commanders for all the emergencies we can see befalling the community. All the large ones require Block Captains and radios. This then is probably our single biggest problem right now. Please talk to your Block Captain and ask them to get a radio with a charger... while you're at it... consider buying one for your self.

Hey, all you sons, daughters and grandkids... what a great gift for Grandpa and Grandma, an FRS radio with a charger! Nothing says love like an FRS radio :)

The next time we have a power loss wouldn't it be great to just be informed as to what is going on? Wouldn't you like to know that there is someone out there that you could ask for help... Here is one for you... You have a power loss, it's raining, blowing, nasty, your wife is having a heart attack, your phone doesn't work, You don't know how to get your garage open to go to the hospital.. You have a radio :) tune to CH5 and ask for help... Most of us know CPR. We know how to get your garage door up We have stretchers and know how to use them. In fact they were especially designed by our seniors for our seniors.. And some day the clubhouse may have a defibrillator... 95% of the CERT team has been certified to use them.

CERT Team Creates Controversy At LVH....

Monday, 15th... @The Social Club Meeting...

In the last year and a half that the CERT team has come into existence it has always been plagued with funding problems that have caused it to seek many creative solutions toward making our community a safe place during an emergency. A finer group of community minded citizens you could not ask for in my opinion.

Since we are dedicated to raising the LVH community to a standard that will enable the community to survive all manner of disasters and 90% of our training and time is spent right here at LVH working for the common good of every resident at LVH we sought to acquire status as a service club working under the auspicious of the Social Club in addition to our affiliation with the Federal Emergency Management Agency, Police, Fire Dept.'s, Coast Guard, Red Cross and Lincoln County Emergency Management.

Our goal in doing that was to ask the Social Club to support our group with a $250 annual budget. The Social Club voted unanimously to take us under their wing and fund us.

Not very long after the meeting was over we started getting feedback that a resident was upset and asserted we (the CERT Team) would bleed the Social Club treasury dry. Personally, this was offensive to me and probably to the whole team of volunteers who have spent many hours of voluntary work and monetary donations of their own.

Now the activity planning group which met shortly thereafter has come up with an idea that we can all get behind. They suggested that we (the CERT team) could volunteer to cook a couple of breakfasts during the year to help defray the $250 funding we asked for. Most of us have learned from life that their is no free lunch and so the team members all felt good about volunteering to help cook those breakfasts and are looking forward to yet another way to serve the community.

Entering a post script here.. The Social Club and the CERT team are working on ideas for future fund raisers.

A new kind of Pine

Last night as we returned home from the Sizzler after dining we saw a person (looked like a lady) Standing down by the gate looking across the park. We decided to go around and investigate. By the time we got back around to have a look she had disappeared. So up the hill we chugged on Evergreen.. When we spotted a new kind of large pine in front of Ben Davi's house. It was a Porcupine. He was big-un.

He was digging and rooting in the grass. We took Ben home and got the million power light out and back around to watch Porky. He had wandered over to Jackie Johnson's home and was bothered by our spotlight so he ambled up to Mike Larsen's fence and went toward Windmill. Cool huh?

Our Newport Police Department

Today was the culmination of a lot of work for the Newport Police Department's web sites. We have been working setting up the accounts with them for quite awhile. Yesterday we received a green light from the Chief to finish the websites. They are all operational now and make a lot of tools available to you for reporting criminal activity or problems in our community. In addition there is an arrest log that shows who got arrested and why. There is a new News Release page that gives the full accounts of an arrest. Not the abridged ones you see in the newspaper.

Be better informed about the community and visit and use these new sites as often as you like.

Take a look at the "File a Report" page. We made it with the folks here at LVH in mind based on what we have observed over the years. It works beautifully just fill in the form and send it.

The police Dept has plans to change pictures on their site more often to give you a window on their activities and plans for two more websites. One will be a page that honors our police and another will be a form that you fill out that will put your name on a police email list where they can warn and update the community about developing problems. I start Medicare on February 1st. I'm a Newbie and can use your advice and experience. I've called some local Dr.'s but they are not excepting new Medicare Patients. So , what I am asking for is help from you . Do you know of any Dr's accepting new patients? Do you know of one that is familiar with dealing with the Veteran's Administration?
