Large Screen TV Update...

I have had several questions about the coming debut of the large screen TV so here is what's going on. JoJo Teichert is the person from whom we are buying the TV. Tomorrow, Wednesday the 6th at 1:00pm I go to her home to get it with my truck. I will have someone to help move it.

JoJo does not know the status of the TV .. Whether it is working or not. She says it was the last time she used it months ago. I will take it to the clubhouse and hook it up to cable and see if it is working. If it does and all is well then I will buy it from her. At the next Social Club meeting I will ask for $50 to cover my outlay. If it doesn't pass I'll just eat it.

I went to Larry Henson this afternoon. He wants us to understand that if it needs repairs or replacement it is the responsibility of the Social Club. His concern also is that the pool players be able to view the set as this is part of their meeting. They like to watch sports while they play. The TV has its own rollers so I think the pool player will be happy as they can position it where they may. The hole where the current tv is is not large enough for this TV to fit so that is a problem to be resolved.

Think of the addition of this tv as a chance for us to see if it is something that folks will use. When it no longer works then we will have a good idea whether we want to spend money on a new one.

The station’s fast orbit of Earth — at 17,500 miles per hour — put everything and everyone into a weightless state, making life interesting, to say the least."

Many items could be brought or bargain for at the annual Longview Hills Garage Sale. You could find everything from A to Z and then some. Even had some pre Duck Fans around, before the big game started on TV. Many attended the after sale pizza party at the Club House, thank you to all those who took part and hope everyone found what they needed. Until next year save up those unwanted items.

GARAGE SALE BONANZA!!

We may have a great deal coming our way from the garage sale. I will be looking for a couple of guys to help me move a 46" Big Screen TV to the clubhouse where we will hook it up and give it a try. It is coming from one of our neighbors. If it works ok and we get permission from Larry the clubhouse will have a large screen TV.

How about Monday night Football with hot dogs and beer and friends?
The World Series with hot dogs and beer, peanutz and friends?
Movie Night at the clubhouse with friends??
Basketball you say? Come on down...

Ain't this a hoot? Make LVH your hobby today and enjoy making new activities.. NEW neighbors welcome! We promise you only be new the first time you come to any activity then you find so many friends you won't be new for the next.

New Skype Phone Is PC Free
Topic: Phones

Skype has announced the first cordless phone that doesn’t need a PC to run the popular VoIP service. The Philips VOIP841’s base station can be plugged into a landline or ethernet connection, letting you make Skype calls as well as calls from your home phone number. It’s not travel friendly like other Skype phones — because it uses DECT rather than WiFi, you can’t use it with wireless hot spots, but that’s a small quibble given that this is the first standalone Skype handset. The phone will be released around Christmas this year."

Neighborhood Watch Patrol

Have you seen the Neighborhood Watch Patrol Signs cruizing around the park and downtown? There are several sets of them always in motion on different resident's cars.. Always changing. The impact on the community and the crooks is that they see that there is a large watchful presence at Longview Hills.

There really is no patrol and no set times to patrol. The signs just move around the park and Newport at random doing their job of warning of a presence. The impact hoped for is that the crooks get it in their heads that it is just not worth the effort to mess with Longview Hills when there is more easily unwatched targets for their thievery elsewhere.

The program started years ago with one set of signs donated by the Shimek's. At first there was a real patrol on holidays that was hard to get volunteers for. Then we hit on the idea of just having the sign on the Thomas truck sitting out front on Widmill and the occassional trip downtown.

One day, Charles Burke started inspiring the community about the purpose of the signs and motivating different folks to take turns of about a month to place the magnetic placards on their autos. Because of his dedication we had a long list of volunteers. Seeing that list grow the Davi's got the Social Club to buy more signs. So there started to be a larger presence throughout LVH and Newport as the volunteer vehicles went about their daily travels.

Now Charles is laid up with medical problems and he is unable to keep up with doling out the signs and finding volunteers to take them for a month at a time. The result is that the signs are showing up at my home as the volunteers come to the end of their month long commitment.

If we want to continue this program we need to find a way of keeping the signs on the cars. I would like to encourage you to take a set of sign out for a one month stroll around the community. You don't do anything just slap that puppy on your car and at the end of a month bring it back and put it on the red truck at 5706 NE Windmill dr. Want to help? When you see a set of signs on the red truck just take a set and put them on your car. Leaving on a trip? Just put them on the red truck. No sign up.. No commitment. Do what you can ... When you can.

With the flood of people entering the park this Saturday it would be nice to see those signs making a presence all over the park.

One other thing that you might not know is that Mike Rosica works nights at Walmart and for many months he has patroled every LVH street on his way home in the wee hours of the morning. He does that almost every day. At one time he caught 3 teenagers in the park at about 4am and called the police on them when they could not account for their presence at such a strange hour.

For you new folks you may wonder how we keep such a nice park here?? It is not all bought by money some of the perks and conditions are bought by the community's volunteers and their selfless donation of time.. Come join us.

Environmentalists: Condos Threaten Coast, Environmentalists Worry New 'Condo Hotels' Skirt Protections on California Coastal Development - C

Ron says:
When you look at Worldmark in Depot bay and the hotels along the Beach... Shilo, Elizabeth Inn and all the new construction going on along the beaches you begin to see more and more areas closed to access. My personal dislike is the signs that try to keep you from the beach at South Shore in South Beach. I lived in CA most of my life and there were whole communities that stopped beach access forcing families to drive miles to find access with terrible parking problems just to enjoy the beach. Here there is a law that says you cannot have access restricted but CA has the same laws.. It doesn't work.

Buying The Right Printer, Cost Of Use Should Factor Into Decision Along With Purchase Price - CBS News

Buying The Right Printer, Cost Of Use Should Factor Into Decision Along With Purchase Price - CBS News: "I recently had a chance to try out two Hewlett Packard multi-function devices that serve as a printer as well as a scanner and copier. The DeskJet F380, which does a reasonably good job on all three functions, costs only $79 to buy, but a black ink cartridge (the ink people use the most) costs $15 and yields approximately 150 pages at a cost 10 cents per page. But if you were to spend $199 for HP’s soon-to-be-released higher end Photosmart C5180 multi-function device (MFD), you would not only get a faster and better printer, scanner and copier and but one that was substantially cheaper to use. Its black ink cartridges cost $18 but yield 480 pages at a cost of about 3.7 cents a page. "

A View from the Hill Newsletter..

Many of you have noticed that Jim and Marlynn McCrea have a for sale sign in their front yard. Jim told me they already have a new home in Brigham City, Utah which is where their son lives along with their grandkids. They want to spend more time with their family and so they will be leaving the community.

Jim and Marlynn have put the Newsletter out for the last few years but now we will be experiencing a void. It is possible that the Newsletter will not even be published. Jim so loved writing that he is thinking of writing a weekly column about the news in general and publishing it here on the website from Utah. We don't know how many hours the two of them put in but it has clearly been a labor of love. Jim majored in English in college and has enjoyed using his considerable skill as our editor.

Now we need to move on as we all do over time here at LVH. The search is on. It does not have to be a one man show.. Several of you could volunteer to put the monthly news out. Once again, the thing you have to remember is this a new expeience, a new hobby.. it isn't a task.. A chance to do something you may have not had a chance to do in pre-retirement life. We have the time now and this is a fun opportunity to get into. There is not a stampede of people running down the street yelling, "Pick me .. I wanna do it".

I think because we have all volunteered so much of our lives for reasons other than fun that the word "volunteer" just conjurs up the feeling that you want to become real small and hide. We jealously guard our new independence from having to work and our freedom of retirement.. thinking that the jobs such as this one are time robbers, boring and uninteresting.

Ladies and gentlemen it isn't so. This is a great way to have fun, meet new people, improve writing skills, be in the know on events and happenings and you call the shots. What goes in? You say.. The time you want to spend on it? Your the boss.. You decide.

Should we let this job slide? Well one sad impact of it would be the loss of advertising revenue which pretty much keeps the Social Club on an even keel. Those that don't have a computer are going to miss out on a lot of information.

So, if you Nawwwwed this appeal earlier or if this your first time hearing it ... Won't you give it a second thought? Maybe give it a try? Call Social Club President Wayde Duddley today and say, "I'll give it a try".
A New Poll..

Take the new poll on the left side of the website. The Social Club wants to know what games our community would like to play on game night.

In order to vote multiple answers to the questions you have to vote one item .. press the vote button and then return to the poll box and select your next answer and then press the vote button again. Do that for every answer you like.

Have fun... This will give the Social Club the info they need to make more fun for us..

RT ( by the way I hate games.. not voting )

Senior Funnies Help!

Those of you that have enjoyed the Senior Funnies website have a void. See here is what happened to the site.. Charles Burke became ill. I had come to rely on him for a continuous stream of jokes that people were sending him in his email and he finally ran the site and I was on to other projects. As you know by now Charles is pretty well laid up with health issues and cannot keep up the site until he has an improvement in his condition.

Well I have a number of irons in the fire at this time and also do not have the time to keep it up. So it is going to sit there and you will be able to call up the archives and get a laugh or two if you want. Meanwhile, we are leaving an open invitation to anyone who would like to give it a try.

I will set up anybody or group of folks that may like to give it a try. It takes about a half hour to get set and I will help you do that. I remain in the background as technical advisor and Censor and occasional contributor.

The site is set up so that those that keep it up cannot cause it to have any harm so it is fool proof. You can make mistakes until the cows come home and it won't be a problem.

Here is how it works...

You put in all the jokes people send to your email.. Pictures anything worth a laugh. You also make sure they (the jokes) adhere to the following rules:

Jokes that may cause a neighbor to feel badly because of an ethnic slur, Political or religious positions are also not a good idea. The easiest way is to be aware and practice the Golden Rule.
You should not be offended if I decide to delete a joke that I feel violates the above rules of the road. I will just pull it but will not necessarily say anything to you. These rules were made up over the years by finding out the hardway what not to do.

You can think of the websites, The Social Club, The CERT team, The Fisherman's Club, Pool, the Newsletter all of these things at LVH not as chores but as your hobby. If that becomes your take on it you will enjoy any activity you make your own. In your pre-retirement life these were volunteer activities that you took on for your kids family or because the boss wanted you to. You really did not take them because you wanted to but because you had to. Now there are a variety of things that you can do that may be interesting and fun if you can only get your head around the idea that what you choose is fun and a hobby not another boring volunteer drudge job.

MAXINE BERNSTEIN

Straight talk, a crowbar and finally a Taser dart to the waist -- nothing worked."
...AND A NICE TIME WAS HAD BY ALL.

Ben Davi invited the neighborhood to join with his family in celebrating the life of his wife Donna who passed away a few weeks ago.

Donna had expressed a desire for a gala event and her wishes were granted.  Sixty four chairs had been set, and more had to be taken from the store room to satisfy the needs of the over flow crowd.

Family members and friends recalled Donna's life with stories from childhood to her time here at Long View Hills.  In keeping with the festive mood only a few tears were shed.

To some the dinner fare was a new experience.  Donna had requested "Okie" food and her wishes were carried out.  Fried potatoes, ham hocks with beans, fried okra, and tomato salad were on the menu.  One could tell the diners with "Okie" blood by observing that they knew to put the beans in a bowl rather than in a section of the partitioned dinner plates.  The true blue "Okies" knew to put the corn bread down first and put the beans on top.

The Club House was decorated with an array of pictures of Donna and her family, as well as a display of the many cards received by the family.

The celebration drew to a close by sixty four white balloons released into the windy summer air in the parking lot one at a time by those in attendance.  The sixty fifth balloon was red.....it was released by Ben.  It seemed like the red balloon soared the highest into the clear sky.

A neighbor remarked that she had asked Ben if he had any plans about moving.  She related that Ben said "I wouldn't know where to go, all of my friends are here in Long View Hills".

Events like this serve to remind us that we really DO live in a nice neighborhood, don't they?

This 80 year old woman was arrested for shop lifting.

When she went before the judge in Cincinnati he asked her,

"What did you steal?" She replied, "A can of peaches."

The judge then asked her why she had stolen the can of peaches

and she replied that she was hungry. The judge then asked her

how many peaches were in the can. She replied six.

The judge then said, "I will then give you 6 days in jail."

Before the judge could actually pronounce the punishment, the

woman's husband spoke up and asked the judge if he could say

something. The judge said, "What is it?"

The husband said, "She also stole a can of peas."

Rich Rodriquez

We recently heard from an old friend who lives near Ventura, CA. He worked on the oil platforms with me for many years. He ran a crew as the Head Operator for years coaxing oil from deep inside Mother Earth to the surface.

Over the years he had begun to think of where he wanted to retire to and bought a plot of land in Mariposa, Ca. the gateway to Yosimite National Park. He has slowly built his dream home over the years but his wife Debbie had always wanted a very special kind of guest house. Here are pictures of her new guest house. We thought you might enjoy them as much as we did.
RESCUE RANDY GIVES WORK-OUT TO SENIORS

The CERT team ..

Met today to try and develop ways to move injured people that are Senior friendly. Recognizing that age brings physical limitations, the CERT team spent the morning revising what they had been taught in class to be user friendly in the field. Their goal was to find ways to move injured people without becoming injured themselves.

We found that the severely injured can be moved safely by a team of 5 to 7 people depending on the patients weight. The Fire Department's rescue dummy weighs in at 175 lbs of dead weight. More importantly the team got practical experience working together and now 5 of us know what works and what doesn't. In an emergency we won't waste time trying to find that out. We can adjust the size of our rescue teams to include 2 CERT members and 5 volunteers from the community. That will give us 3 to 4 teams with our present manning.

The most effective way of lifting was a blanket stretcher. 4 people lifting and one holding the head immobile was very easy. With heavier people we will use 6 lifting team members. Combining the blanket with an underlayment of a plastic tarp made dragging the patient across the floor really easy. We tried a piano dolly with plywood underneath the tarp then only one person was needed to move the patient.

This lead us to beleive that if we build a 6X3 piece of plywood with handholds and mount it on wheels we will have an excellent extraction tool. We further found it is easier to use an open bed ambulance rather than a van. We used the electric Rascal scooter and found it very easy to move patients on and off it and into and out of buildings.

One person came by and was making exscuses about why she couldn't help and we quickly pressed her into service holding Randy's head while we loaded him into the back of the truck.
You can be of help at some level.. everyone of you.

One of the most important issues is working together so that we have geled into a team. Some have left our team because of various issues that were important to them. We are sorry to have lost them but look forward to you folks that will be taking the CERT classes in September. Helping after the disaster is as valuable as silver but learning team work now in preparation for what is coming is gold. That is what is going to help our community more than anything else. We meet once a week at eleven AM on Wednesday. You need not be certified to come and train with us. We can show you what has to be done and we want to hear what you think.

"Who knew the drive on Highway 20 into Newport runs through the Renaissance?

On a grassy hillside, three-and-a-half miles east of Newport, now rests the Mona Lisa. It's appearance there during the weekend was for many a mystery. But for the man who created her, its genesis isn't bound up in some DaVinci Code.

'It's just something I've wanted to do for about 35 years,' said local artist Samuel Clemens, who was driven to create her at last by a need to balance his art, his responsibilities and a growing feeling that perhaps never the twain shall meet.

'Out of the frustration out of not being able to do my artwork,' because he had been working so much, 'I decided I could do this and make myself happy again,' he said. 'And maybe other people would like to look at it, too.'"

CERT Meeting Wednesday
11:00am at the clubhouse..We need helpers for this meeting!!!

Rescue Operations...

We have borrowed Rescue Andy from the Fire Dept. Andy weighs in at 175 lbs of dead weight. When we had our training we wrestled Andy a bit. I think all of us found Andy was a bit more than we thought we could handle. So we need to adapt. We are going to try more senior friendly ways of moving Andy.

We are going to need helpers .. those people that would show up at a disaster and want to know if they could help... You are the ones we want if you have a spare hour. Kibitizers will also be welcome.

We will try a blanket drag. Maybe office chair pushing, Someone, proposed using a dolly.. bring it. A mechanics creeper maybe. Got ideas? Material bring it. Anyone have a stretcher? Bring it.
Plastic tarp? bring it.

We need maybe some plywood.. I'll bring my truck and van and electric scooter, piano dolly and regular dolly I'll try to get an old blanket. How many will it take to move Andy? I don't know. But the idea is to move Andy so that no one gets strained muscles or joints. You can always move the dummy but what good is it if we hurt ourselves in the process and become part of the problem.

See you tommorow...

LA GRANDE -- Pat Matthews hoped to see a moose as he hiked along an overgrown old northeastern Oregon logging road recently.

He spotted none of the big, secretive animals, now estimated to number about 30, but the state wildlife biologist counted 118 piles of droppings. That got him thinking about how many moose really might be living in the northeast corner of the state."

He has so enjoyed putting pictures on the websites for this and the Fisherman's page as well as a constant barage of jokes on the Sr. Funnies.

You can see that we are going to miss his optimistic input and we are leaving him on to publish anything he feels like on his good days.

Taking up the slack, I will try to keep those pages up but this operation is pretty big these days and really needs more people that want to take up a non-serious hobby just for fun. It is pretty easy and I will give personal instruction to anyone carrying to give it a try.

HOME @ MIDNIGHT

What happened to the 11 1/2 hour trip? We were on the road at 7:30AM. What happened.. Life dealt us a joker. Just outside of Medford our van lost all electrical power.

Call to AAA they came out and towed us to Sears but wait! How can we all ride there. Especially Lori on wheels? (Wheel Chair). Well a couple of good samaritans stopped by when they saw us stranded with Lori's wheel chair hanging out the back of the van. One of them took Jacky and Lori to Sears. The cats stayed in the van with the windows down and in their carriers. After the tow I got everybody including the kitties inside Sears Automotive waiting room where it was nice and cool with air conditioning. There we all waited 4 hours for the car to be repaired. Though we are all heavy persons we came out of Sears $400 lighter and were on our way.

Not exactly a great day but a lot of great people and service men helped us and we were very lucky to find such nice people. I am sure glad it happened in Oregon.

Good to be home and as we pulled in I noticed the Breakfields are back from Alaska. Bet they felt the pull of their new home just as we do. I love Newport, Oregon.

COMING HOME!

@ 7:00am Sunday we will roll toward home. Packed the car today and gassed up at $3.08 a gallon.

It was a real challenge getting everything in the van. Since Lori has to lay down all the way I removed the seat and am leaving it here. A couple of foam mattresses now are in its place. Have everything but the last things such as crutches and wheelchair, computer and a couple of overnite bags.

We will see you all around the park on Monday.

Things are going pretty well

Tommorow I have to prepare the van for Lori. She is going to have to ride the entire way to Newport Laying down on a mattress in the back with her foot elevated above her heart. This is not like any broken foot thingy we have ever heard of. They put her in a soft cast 6 months ago and told her they did not know where the pain was coming from because x-rays showed no break. Finally, they did an MRI an viola! there has been a break all along. Then the operation. The instuctions.. Must lay down 90% of the time with the foot elevated above the heart. No weight whatsoever on the foot. The foot is splinted and only in a half cast. It can't have a cast on it.

This makes care for her pretty intensive. She says not to worry however as she will have us whipped into shape in no time at all :(

Then there is capture of the two cats on Sunday. One is pretty nice and will go in his carrier without complaint.. it's his favorite sleep hidy hole anyway. The other cat is psychotic and for the most part does not like people,, will run and hide if you get her carrier out. Capture of her is going to be fun. So Sunday is to be spent on the road with a cranky foot, 2 cats singing and 11 1/2 hours of drive. But I have a secret weapon.. 2 packs of ear plugs.
Well I just had to write about a few things I have seen in this park.

Here the rule is you cannot walk your pet on a leash in the park... I swear this is true, honestly... Yesterday as I was going shopping and here came two ladies walkiing their dogs... Not like you are thinking... They were carrying the dogs! That is an acceptable practice. More on that.. You are only allowed one dog and it has to go for an interview with park management who determine if it is friendly enough to be allowed.

Each day the park has what is lovingly referred to as "The Park Nazi Patrol" scan the lots for rule violations.

While at the hospital Jacky and I went to the cafeteria. We found the employees rude, and some sanitary conditions questionable. Such as ants on the tables, clean food trays not available. I stand at the cash register for a couple of minutes looking at the clerk who has moved to a table in the restaurant to have a conversation in Chinese with another employee. They just ignore you.

Finally, while eating on a napkin (improvised food tray) I look down the way were a man is sitting ...with a covered stroller. He gets up.. looks around furitively and uncovers the stroller... up pops the head of a dog.. a Corgi I think, right there in the hospital cafeteria.

This morning a man came to spray for ants at the neighbors. I asked how much that costs. He said a $150 for the initial spray and $60 every 2 months therafter. Compare that with our exterminator in Newport who comes in the spring, summer and fall for $30 a visit.

Well that's it from caly fornie

Still here in California..

Today was the big operation. We were all at the hospital from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm. Lori had a bone removed in one part of her foot and grafted to the damaged area of her foot and then a screw put in to hold it all together. She has to keep her foot above her heart for a few days. Until that takes place we are going to have to stay put here at her home in Sunnyvale.

Getting up the stairs to her modular home found her crawling into her house as she can put no weight on her foot.

Since being here and using this new MAC computer of hers I found I cannot get email at my gmail address. So if you have emailed me there I have not read your email... Sorry. However, if you need or want to email us you can email me at teckron@hotmail.com and I do get that one on her machine.

Hot.. it's uncomfortably hot today... Wish we were on our way back.

"Oregon women seeking 'cutest cop' put on probation

HILLSBORO, Ore. (AP) - An Oregon woman who called 911 in hopes of another look at 'the cutest cop I've seen in God knows how long' won't go to jail for misusing the emergency system, a judge decided.

Instead, Lorna Dudash was sentenced to serve two years of probation and 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay $693 in fines and fees.

'People who are, oh, say, older than seven know not to use 911, except when where is an emergency,' Washington County Judge Marco Hernandez told Dudash, of Aloha, Ore. "

USATODAY.com - Gas prices might increase 24 cents:

"Gas prices might increase 24 cents
By James R. Healey, USA TODAY

Gasoline prices could rocket 24 cents a gallon the next few days, as stations across the USA scramble to keep up with big jumps in the prices of oil and wholesale gas, a veteran energy-price analyst forecast Thursday.
'It's going to be brutal, horrendous,' says Peter Beutel, president of energy-price tracker Cameron Hanover. He has followed energy markets for nearly three decades"
SARGENTO CHEESE.  If this is a brand of cheese you enjoy (made in Plymouth, Wisconsin) better run down to the store today and stock up.  The recent $209,000,000 Power Ball lottery was won by a group of 100 Sargento employees.  If they take a lump sum payment each employee will receive between $500,000 and $700,000 AFTER taxes.

Now stop and think about it for a minute.  If you made your living in curds and whey and found over a half a million bucks dropped in your lap, how interested would you be in putting on your white coat and hair net?

Looks to me that either Sargento just went out of business, or Plymouth, Wisconsin will have a boon in employment and the sale of big screen TVs.

California Saga...

We're here!

Strange as it may seem.. it's chilly this morning??? In fact it is cool. Coming down we stopped in Redding for gas and I thought we had entered the gates of Hades as that sucker was unbeleivably hot. Took your breath away.

Cost of gas to get here $49. Gas is running $3.29 here and $2.89 in Philomouth.

Time of travel 11 1/2 hours Newport to Sunnyvale.

Lori has this cat which is a very long haired breed and I can't even say the name of the breed. This year she had someone give him a summer haircut. She did a good job he kept some hair and got rid of a lot of snags. But she shaved his tummy pretty close and lo and behold Simba has a ticklish tummy. New fun..

Operation is Wednesday.

NOT ALL OF THE NEWS IS BAD.....

To save you the trouble of reading today's newspaper I am including in this article the news that does not have anything to do with the war, politics, inflation, terrorism, or the heat wave back east.

159 GRAPES:  A man from India was officially recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records  for being able to stuff 159 green grapes into his mouth at the same time.  The monitors from Guinness carefully examined each grape upon removal to be sure that the skins had not been broken.  A truly newsworthy event!

WORDS OF WISDOM FROM ELTON JOHN:  The well known humanitarian was quoted as saying :  "I'm so over tattoos and rings through the noses.  It's not pretty, it's not pleasant, it's not exciting.  Please stop it now."  The world will immediately become a better place because of this quality advice.

EVEN MORE WISDOM FROM ZIGGY:  The loveable cartoon character was standing on the scale when he said:  "I think that the reason it's so hard to lose weight at my age is because after all these years my body and my fat have become such good friends!"

Now you may get started on your weekend knowing that you are up to date on everything that was worthwhile in today's newspaper.       Jim McCrea

Near Tsunami... Far Tsunami ???
Please read this it may just save your bacon.

Last night a group of CERT people and other interested parties attended a lecture on Tsunami's and how they affect us, Oregon's Coastal Community. The lecture was at the Hatfield Marine Science Center. Although it had some local leaders in the community it was replete with scientists.

They had the research and pictures to illustrate the message they wanted to bring to our community. They talk in a different language sometimes called Scientificeze according to the moderator but they had come to point out a warning the best they knew how and it got through to me. I am going to condense it and put it here as simply as I can.

The message is that, "Life often brings you the event and you learn your lesson as the result."
In this case the lessons were:
  • The Indonesian tsunami is exactly what they expect here because the geology is similar.
  • Those that knew what to do were saved (More or less).
  • The height of previous tsunami's here (ages ago) is still under investigation. One group feels not above 40ft . Some scientists are investigating cores from Salt Marshes along the coast that suggest ancient waves that were much higher.
  • The earthquake that is likely to cause a "Near Tsunami" to happen here is going to be far larger and prolonged than anyone here has ever felt.
  • Government help might not arrive for days (Look at Katrina).
There are two kinds of Tsunamis. Near Tsunami and Far Tsunami.

Let's look at the Far Tsunami first. These are generated far north of here in the general area of Alaska. Earthquakes of over 7.1 magnitude generated there have the potential of causing a far tsunami here in Newport and further down the Pacific coast. We feel nothing! But, the waves may be on the way. They take 3 or 4 hours to get here. They will keep coming, one after another, for up to 8 hours. We will be warned by TV, and radio and NOAA Emergency Radio of the possibility of a Tsunami. DON'T GO TO THE BEACH TO WATCH THEM... It may be the last thing you do. Wait for the all clear from the media before going anywhere.

The aftermath of a far tsunami may leave our community stranded as hwy 101 may be cut and bridges washed out locally and inland.

The Near Tsunami.. This is where you really need to pay attention. In the above scenario you had plenty of warning and you knew what to do. Everything is orderly and planned. Enter the near Tsunami.... Chaos! You must think and plan what to do now in order to increase your chances of survival. There will be NO broadcast warning. NONE! NADA! Knowledge can save you! Knowing what to do and drilling your family on it is your greatest chance for survival.

The near tsunami will happen as a result of a massive earthquake from a fault that lies some 70 miles off of our coast and running through Northern California, Oregon and Washington.. It will happen! Core samples show that it has happened every 300 to 500 years. The last one happened in January 1700. The quake may go from one end of that fault to the other resulting in what may be the longest in time and distance that those alive today have ever seen or felt. The scientists feel that this monster will be in the range of a 9.1 earthquake.

Your warning.. How will you know? It's not a siren, a bell or a whistle! Your Warning is the Earthquake itself. A tsunami is further indicated by a withdrawing of water out to sea. If you see that there is no doubt that one is on the way. During the quake duck, cover, and hold on. After the quake get to high ground. Do not pause to get anything.. Get going.. Get to high ground immediately. Don't drive, walk, the roads will be jammed. You have about 10 to 15 minutes before the first Tsunami arrives.

If you live in the park the elevation at my home is 235ft above sea level so you are on safe ground here. If you are somewhere else along the coast follow the signs that point the route to safe ground.

CERT's job is to prepare for this type of emergency. We would love you to take the course this September and come join our ranks. We should have a date time and place for the training soon.. We will let you know.

Sneaky Website Editor captures 2 writers in a moment of weakness...

Today we added Jim and Marylinn McCrea to be staff as writers at large since they are moving out of the Newsletter but still like to write we asked them if they might write here whenever the mood strikes them. They answered with an oakie dokie so that makes it official. .. Sort of like signing in blood.

We already got them listed on the left as staff writers so that makes it legal. I am sure it will stand up in any court in the land.. Just in case they try to weasel out of it.

If any of you are feeling the need for writer's cramp just let me know. We will have you signed up so fast you will wonder, "Who was that masked man?".

Just in case you are wondering what you have to know... You have to know how to send a special email and whatever you send is automatically posted to the website.
