Newport Longview Hills CERT team and volunteers. Take on a communications drill

July 14th












The CERT team tried out their communications techniques and using volunteers explored ways to implement rapid response triage at Longview Hills.

Part of the drill was make sure the community received the North Lincoln County fire District SET manual for disaster survival. If you did not receive this highly formative manual please let a CERT team member know and we will get you on the waiting list.

CERT team members and community volunteers went a long way today toward implementing this communities disaster plan. Future projects include incorporating the Neighborhood Watch Block captians into the Disaster Plan.

Updating Donna Davi...

Today finds Donna back in the local hospital where she is resting well, feeling perky and a lot better than last night when she was taken to the hospital by ambulance.

Dr.'s have scheduled her for an MRI today. Think good thoughts for Donna as we wait for her recovery.

Had a great turn out this afternoon at the Club House for the CERT Town Meeting, Ron Thomas and others with our local CERT team made a great presentation to over 50 residents. We also had the Ass't Fire Chief for Newport Toby Cole here and gave a good talk about what is needed to be ready for an emergency situation, that can happen at any time, day or night. Thank you to those who took time to come to the meeting. Remember on this coming Friday there will be a CERT Drill here at LVH's starting at 10AM till Noon, this is to help you the resident and so give our CERT Team some added help this Friday.

What to do about the news feature?

On all the websites we keep up, we keep a statistics counter and are able to monitor the number of hits (visits) per day, week, month and year. You could say you vote for something by the number of times you visit it.

Just like you vote for a product at the store by the number of times and frequency of how often you buy it.

The graph of the news site is averaging about 6 visits a day. That makes me think that a link to Oregon Live (the Orogonian newspaper), the Statesman Journal and our local News Mirror would better serve our community.

The Poll will guide me in what to do about this question. If you have a moment please vote.

I Made a BOO BOO!!

Folks, I am sorry I made an error on the current poll so I've rectified it. It did ask if you planned to come on FRIDAY but the meeting is on WEDNESDAY.. That would be a big ooops. Also, we are only interested in how many people plan to attend so we know how many chairs to put out. Therefore, there is only one answer... Yes.

Restuarant Editor wanted

We are thinking of having a web page where folks go to see where the best deals for meals are in our area. It could uncover where the Senior discounts are. Where the best dining is. What is thought of the service and ambiance.

In short we need a reviewer. If they choose they could also tell the restaurant owner what they are doing and the potential audience that will be reached. Who knows maybe that will inspire a discount?

Many of our resdents dine out a large portion of the week. We think that gives us clout especially in the winter when the tourists disappear from our area.

The page would store all the reviews and locations and would be available for your quick reference. If a restaurant is really poor for some reason it simply will not be listed. That will be our way of not running down an establishment and giving it a chance to improve. However, those listed should improve everyone's dining out experience.

To do this the person(s) will not have to do anything beyond write their review in an email to a special address. The review will instantly be published automatically on the new website...Simple as that.

It was a glorious Easter vacation, despite the chill from the Pacific Ocean winds. The three boys -- ages 8, 7, and 6 -- had built sand castles, collected shells, and thrown sticks into the surf for their dog to fetch. The boys, their little sister, and parents had driven from their home in Tacoma, Wash. to Beverly Beach, just north of the coastal town of Newport, Oregon.

On Good Friday, the family of six made a snug home inside a small driftwood shelter on Beverly Beach. The boys nestled close to each other in their sleeping bags. The three-year-old girl cuddled with her mother, who lay next to the children's father. The dog had winnowed his way between the boys, who'd wrapped their arms around him.

The family hadn't felt closer in a long time. The deep darkness and the constancy of the lapping ocean waves lulled the four children and parents to sleep.

Around 11:30 PM, the mother and father awoke when a small wave penetrated their shelter and soaked their sleeping bags. Quickly, the parents got the children up, and began walking towards the cliff and pathway up to their car. The mother, a strong swimmer and Red Cross Senior Life Saver, held the hands of two of the shivering children. The father held on to the other two.

Suddenly, a second, devastating wave hit. The mother was thrown 400 yards up the beach, and knocked unconscious. The father was thrown against the cliff but managed to climb up the cliff to get help.

The four children were swept out to sea. Only one of the children's bodies was ever found. The family dog was also lost.

The tsunami waves covered the entire length of Front Street, and about thirty blocks of Crescent City were devastated. Lumber, automobiles, and other objects carried by the waves were responsible for a good portion of the damage to the buildings in the area. Fires started when the largest tsunami wave picked up a gasoline tank truck and slammed it against electrical wires. The fire spread quickly to the Texaco tank farm, which burned for three days. Final tsunami damage in Crescent City was estimated at $7,414,000. (1964 dollars)."

Computer Tip

from George and Diane Doyle

When burning CD's for music George decided to put labels directly on the CD's listing the tunes and artist. He put the labels on and played his music. After the third playing of the music George says his CD player began to skip. Thinking something was wrong with the CD's he explained his problem to the clerk where he bought the CD's. The clerk asked him if he had put labels on them to which George replied he had.

The clerk told him that was the problem and that the label lifts the CD just enough to cause skip. George went home and removed the labels and it cured the problem. He now puts the labels on the CD plastic case.

Larry and Virginia Dale must be terribly excited about their new home. They strategically placed their living room window to capture the view between their neighbors home. They are right on the money as they view the ocean between the Furgason's and the Spangler homes.

Above is another new home moved into the neighborhood. Rumor has it that the spa leaves something to be desired...

Wal Mart does away with , "Vials of Life" program.

We used to get the medical information forms and vials to store them in from WalMart. You may recall that the system calls for the homeowner to store vital medical information in a tube and put it in their freezer and to place a placard on their door saying they use the vial of life system.

If an EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) has to visit the home during an emergency they know to check the freezer for that information which affects how he/she will treat their patient.

Jacky Thomas (my boss otherwise known as my wife) has called everywhere looking for a new source. If you know of one please let us know.

Meanwhile, if you happen to be at WalMart thank them for their considerate donation in the past and express your opinion of their doing away with this vital program.

THE TRIP............
One day, the father of a very wealthy family took his son on a trip to the country with the express purpose of showing him how poor people live.
They spent a couple of days and nights on the farm of what would be considered a very poor family.
On their return from their trip, the father asked his son, "How was the trip?""It was great, Dad."
"Did you see how poor people live?" the father asked. "Oh yeah," said the son."So, tell me, what did you learn from the trip?" asked the father.
The son answered:
"I saw that we have one dog and they had four. We have a pool that reaches to the middle of our garden and they have a creek that has no end.
We have imported lanterns in our garden and they have the stars at night.
Our patio reaches to the front yard and they have the whole horizon. We have a small piece of land to live on and they have fields that go beyond our sight.
We have servants who serve us, but they serve others.
We buy our food, but they grow theirs.
We have walls around our property to protect us, they have friends to protect them."
The boy's father was speechless.
Then his son added, "Thanks Dad for showing me how poor we are."Isn't perspective a wonderful thing? Makes you wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have, instead of worrying about what we don't have.
Appreciate every single thing you have, especially your friends!

I don't want to hear any giggles or laughter as to what I'm about to
disclose. You see the way I see it You'll probably say I had it
coming. Yoy know me, I try to be caring and sympathtic at all times,
all I ask is no "He probably deserves it." Wed. night at 12:05 am I
had a sinus attack so bad that Bev made me get up from desparately
trying to get some sleep to take a midnight ride to the hospital. They
gave antibiotics and a horse size shot in each hip, and in half an
hour was ready to go dancing. Got up at 6:00 am and turned on the
sprinkler to the lawn and at 6:30 am went out to turn it off. Well
between the wet grass and me being bare footed, when I turned the
corner to turn the hose bibb off, the next thing I know My legs are
flying out from underneath me and when I came down on my ankle, a big
crunch could be heard by all. When Bev took me back to emergency, The
same Dr. Goldman was still on duty, and as they were setting the soft
cast on he came in with the wise words "Son, (actually I'm quite a bit
older than he is} "You need to learn to be more careful." The hard
cast will be put on Mon., and hoping it will be a walking cast, as I
have learned to hate crutches. The only reason I'm letting out this
story, is that now with more time on my hands than I should have, some
of you might get "spammed" to death as I've got lots of time to find
and send the funnies. Hoping YOU are all well, and any sympathy you
might think of sending should be sent to Bev. Who,by the way, has just
recovered enough from her knee replacement to be able to bring coffee
and such, but who somehow has lost her bell which she rang vigoursly
when she was on her back. If any one has a big bell they are not
using, please forward. Dick

Emergency Radio Syst

Emergency Radio System takes a giant step....

The LVH emergency radio system has gained another big component today to make it a working reality. The system is being designed to give LVH the ability to communicate with all state and federal agencies in the advent of a disaster. All the components for a successful system have dropped into place as of today. We have gained a volunteer HAM radio operator that will relay our messages in and out to all agencies in a disaster situation. He is our interface between here and the outside world.

His name is John Wilson and he is setting up equipment to give us the coverage we need. He was selected for us by Jim Hawley the director of Emergency Communications for Lincoln County. Jim is able to supply John with special equipment to tie LVH into all federal and state agencies.

The only part of the system that is weak right now is you the LVH citizen. The CERT team’s job is prepare you for disaster and to prepare itself for disaster. The CERT team has been training since last September. Now they can go no further without you on board.

Here is what you can do to start. Come to the town hall meeting this Wednesday, the 12th and catch the rollout of the CERT disaster plan. Find out about the LVH emergency radio plan... Learn about the CERT disaster drill Friday the 14th.

Disaster happened in New Orleans and in the South Pacific last year. Ask yourself had those folks planned for a disaster would it have turned out the way it did? We know it would not have been that bad. Come and find out what you can do.

PORTLAND, Ore. — Sometimes late at night, Rayna Jacobson needs to know her dad is OK. He lives only across town, but he's 83 and has Alzheimer's disease. She worries.

So she logs onto the website for the assisted-living facility where he lives and sees with her own eyes: a little icon of a figure in bed. It means her father's asleep."

So far, I remain an accidental bird-watcher. I have lots of books about birds and a good pair of binoculars, which I use whenever I see a bird that looks unfamiliar to me. We have year-round bird feeders, and I listen to recorded bird songs, hoping I'll be able to recognize the birds I can't see by their singing. But I have yet to set off actually searching for them. I watch the ones that come to me, the ones that make themselves known in the clearing at the edge of the woods that we inhabit."
